327962 2005-02-24 22:13:00 Microsoft are obviously concerned about the increasing competition from Firefox - they have revised their previous stance on not developing Internet Explorer further prior to the release of Longhorn .

The news out now is that IE7 may be released in the middle of this year but available only for Win XP SP2 users . It is expected to have mainly security enhancements rather than new features although the version for Longhorn will be quite different with tabbed browsing expected to be included .

It's good to hear that they are tightening up their security but it is too little too late for me though - no matter how fancy schmancy IE gets, I'm still sticking to Opera .

327963 2005-02-24 22:22:00 Bound to be more bloat, with security features that present their own set of new holes for people to exploit.

And its good to see MS showing so much love for the 50 billion people that purchased all the other versions of their OS and made them stinking filthy rich in the first place.

XP is flawed, IE is flawed, Longhorn is built on the same flaw.

Bought time they stopped flogging a dead horse and made a new OS.

327964 2005-02-24 23:34:00 Im with Metla, big bloated code is all that Longhorn looks like to me when I saw the last Alpha release of it.

Why is IE 6 a 50MB Installer anyways? Firefox is only 5??

Probably because of all the bloat?

Have you never noticed how MSN, whether MSN Messenger, Trillian or Gaim is used, won't connect if Internet Explorer is set to Offline mode?

Internet Explorer won't work if Outlook Express is set to Offline mode either, and vice versa .

That would not happen if IE wasn't so tightly integrated into Windows - Firefox, Opera, etc carry on working regardless whether IE or OE is in Offline mode .

327966 2005-02-25 04:15:00 I know. It's so bloody annoying when MSN refuses to connect if I'm not using IE. "Please make sure your browser can connect to the internet". Hah! I'd find it best if Intetnet explorer couldn't connect at all, and Firefox is my browser @_@ Edward (31)
327967 2005-02-25 04:20:00 Do what I did and remove the IE executable.. I wrote a How-To for transparently replacing IE with Firefox and Outlook Express with Thunderbird. This way it wont be set to Offline Mode and always connects.

My family used it like that before they started using Xandros

Chill.

327969 2005-02-25 08:27:00 Well, Microsoft definitely should open up a forum for internet user to submit their opinion on what would they expect for new IE. Thre more brain power, the more merrier things would get sorted out. Renmoo (66)
327970 2005-02-25 08:39:00 Since switching to Firefox I have not looked back and IE7 is not likely to change my mind. Once bitten, twice shy! Unfortunately you cannot get XP update other than using IE - monoploistic behaviour of course! eds (7357)
327971 2005-02-25 08:53:00 Not monopolistic, just the security inother browsers

Windows Update is an example of a good ActiveX control, however there will be bad sites, which is why ActiveX controls do more harm than good, thustly are disabled in other browsers.
