327878 2005-02-24 08:13:00 Just upgraded from 10.0 to Mandrakelinux 10.1 and things have turned to custard.

If I plug in external USB hard drive or Zip after start up then I can open it once but then after that everything locks up. Cannot open Knoqueror at all.

If I boot with USB connnected then KDE 3.2 desktop starts with no mountpoint shortcuts at all (CD, Floppy,Zip etc) and Knoqueror will not open.

Are there problems with the 10.1 kernel?

Can I downgrade back to 10.0?

327879 2005-02-24 09:34:00 I did the same thing with different things happening to me. I searched high & low to no avail. All I could see was people having troubles with upgrading. I saved everything I wanted to keep to cd, wiped the hard drive & did a clean install of Mandrake 10.1 & everything worked ok, except my scanner. But that's never worked with Linux anyway. 327880 2005-02-24 09:41:00 This kind of event is a good reason to have a separate /home partition (if you have not already). You can format and reinstall Linux to / but leave your home directory intact. johnd (85)
327881 2005-02-25 00:50:00 What kernel? There were some fixes for USB2.0 in 2.6.9-rc4 Chilling_Silence (9)
327882 2005-02-25 00:55:00 You can "usually" do an Upgrade installation to a previous version. ;) It's probably best to not do it between major versions of the kernel (say 2.4 and 2.6). Graham L (2)

Was 10.0 based on kernel-2.4 but 10.1 based on kernel-2.6 ?

The kernel is trying to access the usb-connected device, but some error is causing it to wait and wait and wait and not releasing itself for other processes. God knows why, but this is the reason I never install a new release until it has been patched for at least 12 months and is rock-solid stable. I would help if you could pass the error to a file and post that here.

Unfortunately the best things to do are to re-compile the kernel and the modules to support your usb devices, or downgrade to a known, good release.

Oh, nearly forgot. Is the old kernel still there? I am sure Mandrake will not kill it completely. If it is, you can still boot into it.

According to Distrowatch (distrowatch.com), Mandrake 10.0 had 2.6.3 and Mandrake 10.1 has 2.6.8.1.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Is updating the kernel just that easy? Is there a How To to check out? The Mandrake 10.1 kernel is 2.6.8.1-12mdk. so is 2.6.11-rc4 going to like playing with Mandrake and.........where can a bloke get one of these kernels.
