328065 2005-02-25 07:19:00 Just out of interest Edward, are any of your OS CDs the genuine Microsoft articles, or are they cobbled together home made jobs?

I think Terry may possibly have a good point, and why mess around with alternative DOS versions when the real thing will almost certainly be more compatible.

Cheers

328066 2005-02-25 07:26:00 I have to admit I have no experience of MSDN, I understand it involves subscription to MS and is for software developers and academic institutions with quite different EULAs, and the CDs are different too.

Here is one academic site with install info:

www.denison.edu

and here is the MSDN FAQs page:
msdn.microsoft.com

328067 2005-02-25 07:38:00 hmmm... it worked. I tried the alternative CD again, and it worked!

It threw up quite a few errors during install, but it worked nonetheless

This isn't the offical MSDN CD. What I've done is rip the CD via ISObuster, get a boot floppy from bootdisk.com, and use Nero to merge the 2 together. Strange that it only stopped working now, it must be the CD drive needing cleaning

Thanks for the help everyone :)

328068 2005-02-25 07:47:00 Phew, that's good.

When using Nero for that sort of thing I tend to burn at very low speed, on the basis that not a single bit can afford to be lost or corrupted. Don't know how valid that idea is, but I have had data transfer problems even when within the CDRs rated speed.
