328152 2005-02-25 16:56:00 When you first install your PC, for Windows XP Home Edition, do I need to install "Windows Updates"? AsH_ (7426)
328153 2005-02-25 17:31:00 Isn't Windows Update automatically installed when you install Windows Xp? If this is a special case, yeah, you should install "Windows Update" to be able to receive critical and crucial updates from Microsoft. Renmoo (66)
328154 2005-02-25 19:53:00 On a freshly installed XP, make sure that you have activated a firewall (either XP's inbuilt one or a third party one off a CD) before going online for the first time. It is not uncommon to get XP infected by viruses before you have a chance to download the security and critical patches to prevent this. :)

If your install CD has SP2, then this will include all updates released to that point. This means there will be less updates to be downloaded compared to installing with a XP CD with only SP1 on it. :)

That's an article from The Register. "Infected in 20 Minutes" and that's from August last year.
