| 329027 | 2005-02-28 10:32:00 | I have just loaded win xp with SP1 on a 1 GHz celeron and it won't shutdown. I get the "the computer can now be shut down" message but it won't shut down automatically. What can I do about this? | bpt2 (6653) | ||

| 329030 | 2005-02-28 12:22:00 | as I was kicked repeatedly in the head on Saturday night , this post maybe a bit inacurate , please excuse the spelling as it is difficult to look at my crt at the moment On some comps from a few years back they didn't automacically shut off : they just showed a screen saying something like "It is safe to turn off now" and you had to physically push in and out the power button Good luck MDW |

| 329031 | 2005-02-28 17:32:00 | Not sure this might help, but try this step: 1. Go to Start > Run > Type in "regedit" (without the quotation sign) 2. Expand the tree for HKEY_CURRENT_USER 3. Expand Control Panel 4. Click on desktop 5. Now look for something called HungAppTimeout, post back the value. This value determines the time for Xp to hung out before shutting down. Hope this helps. |

| 329032 | 2005-02-28 19:44:00 | From memory somewhere in power or perfomance options on earlier versions of XP there was a checkbox to enable ACPI but I can't seem to find the setting in SP2 If you can't find it on yours try the following: Hit the Windowskey + Pause/break to enter System Properties Select the Hardware then Device Manager tabs Click on the + symbol in front of ''computer'' Does it say "Standard Computer" If it does it needs to say something like "ACPI uniprocessor PC" To enable the drivers again do this: Boot from the XP CD, Choose repair an xp installation I'm assuming D: is your CDRom, if not replace D: with whatever your CDRom's drive letter is Expand D:\i386\halacpi.dl_ c:\windows\system32 this will extract the ACPI compliant Hal hardware Abstraction Layer to file halacpi.dll Next delete the current hal.dll, and rename halacpi.dll to hal.dll Done XP may ask you for the drivers again for some hardware hth All this is assuming your BIOS supports it & has been enabled Should do though if it was working under '98 |

| 329033 | 2005-02-28 20:38:00 | Have a look in the Power Options in the Control Panel. There should be a box to tick to enable Advanced Power Management. Also, check in the BIOS that Power management is enabled as I have seen some PC's with this problem and once this was enabled they shut down OK. |
