330187 2005-03-03 12:44:00 Greetings,

After reading a recent review posted here by Metla on Ubuntu Linux and thinking back on several recent discussions Ive had with people, something dawned on me:
There's no Linux distro out there for the "middle-man" or "Average Joe", who's had some computer experience and doesnt want a 'dummed down' Xandros or Lycoris, that really caters for the general public.

Some like Fedora & mandrake are great, but they're a "one size fits all" and Fedora still had a Server install last time I looked. No mp3 playback out-of-the-box means its definately not for the average joe.

So, I figured "Why not stop complaining, do something about it, and make your own?!".

And I did!

Spoke with a few of the members here, and the idea was born.

72 hours later, here I am!
Im now posting from the first alpha release of Chills linux distro (If you're good with names, let me know coz that sounds real lame).

Basically its a Gnome-based LiveCD with Firefox as default browser, and many things that as an End-User, myself and many others seem to appreciate.

It boots, works, looks great! Im getting an error when Gnome launches, but otherwise it looks really smooth.
This post is coming from the LiveCD itself so Im very pleased :)

Im keen to get people to help me out, and have already recruited one or two people as soon as they wake up.

I'd love to hear from anybody who has a little bit of bandwidth they can spare to provide feedback, and generally pick it apart!

No, I'm not a testing candidate (Too unskilled yet. You'd get more troubling questions than help) but it sounds like a great idea & I hope it goes well for you.

Roll in, you volunteers for the Chill project...

330190 2005-03-03 18:44:00 If I had a spare PC and wasn't terrified of making changes to my new laptop, I'd do it in a sec, Chill. I'd be interested to hear how people who do install get on. pixeldust (6619)
330191 2005-03-03 18:57:00 If I had a spare PC and wasn't terrified of making changes to my new laptop, I'd do it in a sec, Chill. It is a liveCD, which means it runs off your CD drive and is only loaded in memory without touching your hard drive. Similiar to other liveCD's such as Knoppix. :)

Looking forward to getting it downloaded and booted up :)

Good luck with it. I am really too dumb to b*gger around with Linux - I don't even know XP well enough yet so I will also follow this thread, but not take part. (*Evil grin* Perhaps I should try this on the wife's lappie, and arrange for some medical attendance well in advance to stop all the blood that will ensue *evil grin*)

330193 2005-03-03 19:28:00 I'll grab it tonight Chill. Gentoo based is it? Murray P (44)
330194 2005-03-03 19:46:00 Gentoo it is based off :)

And yes, being a LiveCD means that anybody can throw it in their PC, boot it, and not worry about affecting Windows.

I'm still trying to sort it out, otherwise I'll just put access to it on my FTP.
