330237 2005-03-04 20:55:00 The 29k is just the seed. You need to download bittorrent program and instal it. Then double click on chills (29k) download which will start the actual file.

Started it and download speed is only about 16KB/s. I guess I am spoilt after downloading other distros off jetstreamgames but the download time too long for me. Will have to do an all nighter.

330239 2005-03-04 21:48:00 Im using Azureus to seed - Hopefully in a fortnight I'll release another one if I get enough feedback on whats right/wrong with this baby, and I'll be able to host the tracker myself.

Many thanks to DeHackEd from #bittorrent on irc.freenode.net for hosting it for me this time!

Ive grabbed the source for the software he's written, will have a look later, and should be able to host the torrent myself rather than just seeding :)

330240 2005-03-04 21:51:00 how did you make this? you must be a genius Prescott (11)
330241 2005-03-04 21:54:00 Ha! I wish I could take that credit.

Gets you wondering thou:
If an 18yr old can do this in about 10 hours of his spare time and in between phone calls at work, think about what sorta product Microsoft should be churning out with their multi-billion dollar marketshare and industry leading programmers!

Nothing too Unique yet, aside from its target Audience! Wine may make it into the next release too... I needa review my compression techniques coz the whole thing is only 1.3GB uncompressed! Knoppix is way bigger!

330242 2005-03-05 01:34:00 Thanks Chill - I look forward to comparing it with Xandros, Fedora, and Mandrake.

Can anyone here give me a few facts about bitorrent (I have not used it before)? I have been downloading for five hours, and it says 7 hours to go on a 256k jetstream connection... I have 7 peers connected at the mo, but started with 4.

I presume the slow download speed is because of the traffic both ways. At the moment the download speed is flicking between 16 and 17 kB/s whereas usually downloads are about 30 kB/s.

I also presume that all this traffic up and down will count towards my datacap with jetstream and Paradise? If so, by the time this finishes, I will have a very thin month left (and may in fact have gone over already)...

Can anyone clarify for me if I understand bitorrent correctly? Thanks

John

330243 2005-03-05 02:00:00 Th reason why it is downloading so slow is because everyone that downloads uploads a bit so that other people can get it too. E.g basically more people that download it and keep seeding it, it will download faster.

Yes, it will contribute to your mounthly data cap.

330244 2005-03-05 02:46:00 Thanks. I am over 700Mb in traffic now for a 600+Mb file, and still 5.5 hours to go, so I wonder what it will be by the time it ends! John H (8)
330245 2005-03-05 05:06:00 If you cant afford to upload, then its fine to turn it down. I dont know of a client that will allow you to totally stop uploads.

Basically Im only on 128kbps upload, so if I were to try and send it to all 13 people currently connected to me at the moment, it'd take me roughly a week or so.

At this rate, 13 people will have it within 48 hours because of the fact that once Ive sent person #1 part of the file (there's approx 1200 parts that the tracker has split it into) they can then share that part with other users, meaning I dont have to send it 13x but rather the load can be shared.

330246 2005-03-05 05:24:00 Yes, thanks Chill. I am only too happy to contribute - not whinging, just wondering about what bittorrent is and what the implications are for the rest of the monthly billing cycle!

I have my upload rate set on 80% of the download rate (recommended on a FAQ site I found) but when I checked a moment ago, it was downloading at 4kB/s, and uploading at 17!
