| 331264 | 2005-03-06 10:17:00 | hi folks im on wired country wireless connection and it runs directly into my network card on my pc, now what im wanting to do is network 2 other pcs in my house, but also share the internet connection between them, so im thinking i just need a 4 port switch only, run it out from my pc and have the other 2 pcs connected to the switch and then they can use my connection to access the net. thats right? . so with that scenario all i need is a 4 port switch. please confirm :) now the other scenario im thinking is, for each pc to be able to connect to the net on its own, where as the above scenario means my pc has to be actually running for the other pcs to get online, so how does this setup work?. and whats needed, just a switch still, or a router/switch or a modem/router/switch? find this all confusing :illogical , can someone detail a simple setup for networking all 3 pcs but each pc able to connect individually to the net. cheers!! | 331265 | 2005-03-06 10:32:00 | Ok... from what you have said, I would say go for a 4 port switch/modem/firewall, such as Linksys or Dynalink. Your network would be a simple star setup, with each of the 3 PCs hooked into the switch/firewall/modem. However, this doesn't take into account any other peripherals (scanner, printer etc). A switch with more ports, or another switch may be needed if this is the case. By the way, the switch/modem/firewall is one unit, not seperate units |

| 331267 | 2005-03-07 04:58:00 | Gday thanks myth i like the setup youve described which is the star formation and router/switch/modem, now because i dont use a modem to connect to the net (wired country wireless aerial which runs straight into my ethernet network card) does that mean i can still keep the star formation but only need then a router/switch? and because wired country doesnt use a modem then i dont need a router/switch /modem? thanks rob99, wired country runs straight into my network card by ethernet |
