331280 2005-03-07 00:18:00 For absolute beginners I endorse the comments re Senior Net and again recommend Telecom's 24/7 dial up rate. That way they cannot rack up any unintended bills as they possibly could with broadband.
When you are new to computers dial up seems miraculously fast !!

The current Telecom broadband modem and connection offer ends this weekend anyway and I guess Simonessa the logistics of organising things within that time frame would be too much.

Telecom NZ may not be perfect but who is and it simplfies things allround to stick with them and you not NOT locked into them sometime down the track if you want tochange your plan or ISP

331281 2005-03-07 02:42:00 Agree re Paradise - never had any problems in 2 years and it's just NZ$20.-- every 4 weeks for 250 hours - not much of a strain on the coffers. The Help Desk is brilliant Valerie (4740)
331282 2005-03-07 02:48:00 I hate to say it, but I would choose telescum as well.

It will just get added to their bill and there are no extra hurdles for them to jump over.

331283 2005-03-07 05:23:00 Hi there, I'm hoping you can help me here. I've just brought my parents (in their 50's) a computer as a present and want to include an internet connection with it (I'll pay for the first year) so that they can email/instant message me here in the UK. I don't really know that much about the NZ providers, so need some help as the set up seems a bit different to the UK. For info: we're on broadband here in London and get 1MB uncapped for £25 per month with our cable provider, not sure how that compares with the prices you get?

My parents are complete novices so will only be using it for email and web surfing (if possible instant messaging but that's just a nice-to-have). I don't want them to have additional charges on top of what I pay so I guess I'm looking for an uncapped or unlimited service. The main thing I'm looking for is ease of use, realibility and where they're not going to get huge fees if they ring up a helpline. They won't be playing on-line games or downloading. I tried to look myself but have become completely confused! Can anyone help with suggestions?

Thanks so much.

I would recommend NZ Telecom (regardless of the bad press they get from this forum.)
Two Dial Ups would be , Xtra Value Pack NZ$27.95 per month unlimited. & Xtra Prepay 150 (hours) NZ$ 16.95 per month. Take note that they will not be able to use the phone when the computer is on-line. The same goes for a "Medical Alarm" if they have one.
The other option is broadband Xtra Jetstream Go at NZ$39.95 per month for OneGB. They WILL be able to use the phone AND the computer at the same time with this option. (Try NZ$2.6 to 0ne UK Pound as a rough exchange rate.)
If you wish to go with the Jetstream you had better be quick, before the promotion ends. Ring or Email them, explain what you want to do, if broadband, & they may well log you into the system NOW, with installation in a few weeks. I know this may work for you as it worked for us, in between moving houses.
Where do your parents live,, maybe another PF1er in the same town could help them.

Telecom Xtra phone. 0064 9 355 5200
Telecom Xtra Website, www.xtra.co.nz
Telecom Email, xtra@xtra.co.nz

They May/Will ask for your parents Address, Phone & Account number.
Give it a go, what can you lose. PJ ex Yorkshire Kiwi.

331284 2005-03-07 20:26:00 I wonder if Simonessa ever bothered to read all the helpful information in this thread. I get annoyed when people ask for help and are too ignorant even to say that they don't like the info supplied. Typical of people from overseas they come here and take what they need or can without a word of thanks. theother1 (3573)

I think you may be a bit premature, as I read it the parents are in NZ and are possibly kiwis and the daughter is is in the UK ,possibly on her OE and maybe she has not had the opportunity to respond an d thank contributors

Lets all wait shall we

I wouldn't say it was typical of just overseas members; there are plenty of NZ members guilty of exactly the same thing. One in particular that I remember very well is an infrequent poster of questions (has made about five threads on the forum) and only once returned to give feedback and thanks despite the huge response to all of her questions and people bending over backwards to help out. And she only did that because her next question was only a day after receiving help for her previous query.

The reason I remember this one so well is because I was very interested in the outcome of a couple of her problems and got highly annoyed with her for not returning to provide feedback.

It astounds me how bad mannered some people are.

It astounds me how bad mannered some people are.Well after those comments, it would suprise me if simonessa does return to this thread. That could really make a person feel unwelcome :(. Don't forget not everyone visits this forum every day, and it is not uncommon for the poster to take days to reply back.

However, I agree it is always nice to receive feedback whether good or bad so that you know if your advice was helpful or not, but don't be so quick to leap in and tar someone.

Don't forget to factor in the time difference.

331289 2005-03-08 09:15:00 Hey, don't get me wrong. There may be a good reason why she hasn't been back, but the way I read her (his) message I took it to be an urgent inquiry and there have been two days during which he/she could have checked back.
If he/she is reading this and was going to post again, I apologise.
Also my comment about people from overseas was not aimed solely at people posting here. Time will tell I guess.
