331270 2005-03-06 14:03:00 Hi there, I'm hoping you can help me here. I've just brought my parents (in their 50's) a computer as a present and want to include an internet connection with it (I'll pay for the first year) so that they can email/instant message me here in the UK. I don't really know that much about the NZ providers, so need some help as the set up seems a bit different to the UK. For info: we're on broadband here in London and get 1MB uncapped for £25 per month with our cable provider, not sure how that compares with the prices you get?

My parents are complete novices so will only be using it for email and web surfing (if possible instant messaging but that's just a nice-to-have). I don't want them to have additional charges on top of what I pay so I guess I'm looking for an uncapped or unlimited service. The main thing I'm looking for is ease of use, realibility and where they're not going to get huge fees if they ring up a helpline. They won't be playing on-line games or downloading. I tried to look myself but have become completely confused! Can anyone help with suggestions?

Thanks so much.

If your parents are complete novices, arent going to download or play games etc, i'd advise to purchase an Unlimited Dial-up plan. Although its slow, its cheap. Popular ISPs are Telecom, Telstra Clear and Slingshot.

Hope this helps :)

331272 2005-03-06 16:05:00 Have a look at this one. A big advantage is that with their broadband you never get any extra charges. If you go over your limit you just get cut back to dial up for the rest of the month.

Telecom is exactly the same (for jetstream: high speed), there is no cap rate, just get pushed back to dial up. If your parents are already with telecom, the internet charges will be cheaper than if you were with another ISP as all lines are run from Telecom. Most other ISPs need to charge an xtra fee, which covers the cost of using Telecoms lines.

So best bets are Ihug and Telecom :)

331274 2005-03-06 19:57:00 Where are your parents? this has a bearing as to what services are available to them. Adsl (telecom) broadband is only available for a relatively short distance from the exchange, so if they live rurally they may not be able to get that service. The same applies to cable for different reasons (cable not being laid in all areas). And if they can only get dail up then there are a range of different services available at about $10.00 per month (unlimited).

331276 2005-03-06 20:36:00 Hi Simonessa. Welcome to our group. Slightly off the run of this thread, but can I recommend that you talk your folks in to joining their local SeniorNet club. Computer tuition for the olds by the (slightly more knowlegable) olds. Really great for newbies - Check it out here... (http://seniornet.org.nz/) . Hope you're enjoying that freezing weather. Scouse (83)
331277 2005-03-06 21:07:00 They might as well just go for Xtra's unlimited dial-up plan. 24/7 helpdesk and if they keep the service when you've stopped paying for it, the convenience of having it billed to their Telecom account. Greg (193)
331278 2005-03-06 21:53:00 If you are going to get ADSL you might as well go with ihug or xtra as they both have a free modem and connection deal which will save you around $200. scribe (7496)
331279 2005-03-06 22:11:00 Simonessa I have used paradise (www2.paradise.net.nz) dialup for years, it always connects first time and I never get dropped

cheers
