1381100 2014-08-07 08:10:00 Hi everyone, my first post on here, having some issues with my laptop . Problem started a few weeks ago, the sound randomly dissapeared while watching youtube . Tried rebooting it and sound came back but only for a few minutes and has been like that ever since, (sound for a few minutes after laptop has been started and then disappears) . I have downloaded the latest sound driver but problem persists .

Laptop is a Compaq CQ58 and always running Norton Antivirus etc and has had a full scan since problems started which came up clean . Have done a wee bit of research online to try solve the issue but im now at a dead end, im not really all that clued up when it comes to this stuff . Starting to think it maybe an issue with the actual laptop or speakers and not the software .

Anyone have some advice or can point me in the right direction before i have to take it to a computer tech and pay an arm and a leg??

Thanks

1381101 2014-08-07 08:14:00 Depending on the version of windows thats installed is it on the default sound device?? Its not on mute is it? Look in device manager under the sound entry. What does that say?? Dbl click on it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1381102 2014-08-07 08:23:00 Realtek High Definition Audio - Default Device.

It cant be on mute because i get sound like normal for the first few minutes after ive started it.

1381103 2014-08-07 08:30:00 What version of windows is on it?? If windows 7 uninstall the drivers you installed then reboot. Windows should install default sound drivers. See if they work properly Speedy Gonzales (78)

You can always run it from a Linux Live CD and see if it drops the Audio as well. If it does then its hardware related, if Not its software.

Just Re the arm and a leg -- If a tech has to spend, what sometimes can take hours or sometimes days trying to fix it, don't you think you should be paying for the skill and work done. How would you like it if you didn't get paid for any work you did ?

1381105 2014-08-07 09:46:00 Thank you for the replies, much appreciated, ive uninstalled the drivers and sound seems to be working fine at the moment. Will let you know if it disappears again.

wainuitech - i didnt mean it like that, was meaning i would rather try figure it out myself before having to take it to a profesional and paying to get it fixed, but if it became apparent it was something major i would have no hesitation taking it to a tech and paying to get the issue fixed properly. Cheers

1381106 2014-08-07 11:50:00 Sometimes the "Trick" is to figure out if its hardware or software giving problems. Theres many times a problem with the same symptoms can be caused by either. If theres a hardware fault / failure, all the software fixes will be waste of time.

If it plays up again, you have to look at whats changed.

1381107 2014-08-08 02:15:00 If the speakers work at all, the hardware is probably OK.

If they stop after a while, I suspect some software conflict with the audio settings or driver.

If they stop after a while, I suspect some software conflict with the audio settings or driver . Most of the time that's true, but there is always the exception, like a Lappy I had here a couple of years ago, if you picked it up and moved it you would lose all audio, had a faulty solder joint where the speaker cable plugged into .

1381109 2014-08-08 04:07:00 I know, that's why I said "probably"

Also in your case, an intermittent connection will be, well, intermittent. The OPs problem seems too repeatable. If the hardware was faulty we should see total loss of sound or more inconsistency with regard to the sound cutting out.
