1366802 2014-02-03 19:52:00 Books, pads and pencils seem so ...last century (www.nzherald.co.nz) Webdevguy (17166)
1366803 2014-02-03 20:06:00 I wonder if they gave much thought that this plan will cause a continual fund raising problem?

1366804 2014-02-03 20:16:00 Personally I like it... a lot.

Kids these days have to learn a host of skills to prepare them for later, productive life in an environment where technology equals any other challenge they may be faced with. I mean really, what teenager/young adult could survive university without a laptop these days? Just like learning arithmatic is an introduction to advanced/applied mathematics, today's children need these tools.

Where would we be in our days without a plain calculator! And who's gonna pilot our soon-to-be- nuclear submarines without a basic knowledge of computers? Eh?

Having said that, pads and pencils won't die.

You are right, pads and pencils will always be there for those of use who need to sketch stuff out or make notes for stuff .

I don't think that would be different to any of the other fund raising problems experienced by schools. I guess it comes down to how you go about raising funds. Some approaches are better than others.

1366807 2014-02-03 21:12:00 I wish my kid was given one like that, save me some money :) DeSade (984)
1366808 2014-02-03 21:29:00 are they really necessary ? do they really give any worthwhile skills ? Tabs arnt PC's after all.
there was similar opposition when ball point pens were being allowed in schools: claims that they would make for lazy writing skills & worsen penmanship
same when calculators were allowed in schools & exams: they did make users math lazy when we should have been 'exercising' young minds (me included) .

But the bottom line has to be: good Tablets are not a cheap expense for a family of 3 kids . Are they really necessary? Education wasnt really suffering before they were invented was it ?
Just how long do they last with kids ? Breakage rates ?

1366809 2014-02-03 21:30:00 Judging by the photo the iPads all have protective covers on them so as long as the kids treat them properly they should last fairly well. Webdevguy (17166)

YES.
That is the simple answer to your question but not for the reasons you are probably thinking.
It is not necessary for English, Math and whatever else they are teaching them now but it is very necessary to introduce them to as many items and levels of technology as possible as early as possible.

The world is a technical one and is only going to get more so, the more the kids know about different devices, software etc etc the better off they will be. I don't care if I am buying a "required" tablet for my son and all he does on it is play games, he is learning how to use the technology and that to me is where the real learning is.

Most definitely. Kids can do a lot with technology these days (www.youtube.com)
