It may have been the best system that Microsoft put out at the time but time moves on and normally operating systems improve as new iterations come out..
Its a bit scary to think that they are unable to improve the system after 13 years with all the money and resources at their disposal.

With W8.1 a person can boot directly to desktop -- There's rumors about that MS will bring back the old style Start menu as per previous versions, shortcuts to programs can be put on the desktop already.

Question: Assuming MS do bring back the old Start menu what are people going to cry about then, as it will basically be like W7 ??

Its easy enough to make 8.1 act like W7, in fact SWMBO was on mine the other day and she asked why I had put back W7 ?? -- The reply was " I didn't- you're using 8.1 all I've done is changed the wallpaper" :D

1366676 2014-02-03 03:29:00 I think the windows 8 hate will subside a little eventually, but for many the initial dislike of the new interface and new ways of doing things will have it permanently labelled as a failure unless MS recants and put's it back to something closer to 7. I like it myself but I seem to be in the minority. My personal take on it is the only real failure is not making the new interface optional from the start.

As for XP I agree it's one of MS best efforts, but it wasn't without it's issues and outraged early adopters either. I seem to recall a lot of compatibility, stability, and usability problems when it first came around. Of course coming after Millenium it could only be an improvement which was likely a factor in it's fast uptake. Once the issues were sorted people came around - possibly the only of MS OS's to achieve that so far.

What MS seem unwilling to accept is the large numbers of people who have no desire to change or update anything that's working well for them as is. I tend to replace my PC's regularly but that's my hobby, many friends and family members will hang onto a PC until it fails or becomes so out of date no new software will run on it. They don't tend to like relearning how to use the new PC either.

2x. Like motor vehicles, even for me who know some IT stuff and can build them, in 2010 I was still using Windows XP, in 2009 I got my PC in my signature and I ran that on XP it wasn't until mid 2010 that I did a IT course and got Windows 7 for free. It's reliable, it's smooth, responsive. It works with all my software. Windows cost money to purchase. I might hold onto Windows 7 for years (a total of 10yrs) on this PC. I rather get a grabaseat 70% discounted airfare  Unlike the late 1990s, computers in the last decade can do pretty much everything the average user wants. Before our CRT monitor broke, we also had a 2004 computer, on the net, print server, surfing, faultless. For those that change some of my friends change to Mac maybe b/c it is cool or likewise they might get a nicer Windows laptop because of the cool factor or feel good factor. I myself don't need USB 3.0, dedicated graphics. I hardly even need a optical drive these days. I'm still using an IDE DVD drive from the year 2005.

Edit - I don't edit every photo. But my 24MP dSLR grinds it way with my PC :p
Similarly with my digital camera, my last one was bought in 2004  but I still use more of my old one still unless I was doing low light stuff like indoors or street walks at night but then again like vinyls I am shooting film more often than digital for my own stuff. It won't die. Even if color film goes away there will still be b/w.
