1366356 2014-01-29 03:03:00 I thought I had heard of most things that can occur in nature but the polar vortex that has been covering much of the US lately has thrown up some fascinating phenomena that I had previously never heard of:

Large (3m plus diameter) spinning "ice disks" - slowly spinning like a revolving restaurant on the side of partial frozen rivers within the static ice attached to the river banks .

"Snow doughnuts" - wind blown snow that rolls across fields into tube like forms .

"Ice quakes" - apparently like an earthquake that are strong enough to rattle a house . Something to do with explosive contraction or expansion of underground water .

If anyone is interested I will find the links later and post them .

Are there others that I have missed? Interesting to hear what else is going on in these weather extremes . . .

1366358 2014-01-29 04:06:00 I've enjoyed the cooler weather the past few days and I live in Wellington. Went to Auckland a few summers ago, the weather is sure more warmer and humid. South Island summers can get real hot too, fortunate with aircon these days :D Nomad (952)
1366359 2014-01-29 09:17:00 I was going to find links for the news articles to what I listed above but actually just goggling the terms brings up some great pictures in Google images anyway. Johnnz (7246)

I just remembered why I left Nelson for Auckland many years ago.

The last 2 summers have been really dry.
Bad for the garden watering and absolutely brilliant for the nasty humidity problem.

I'm happy for Auckland to stay this way - it's so nice having heat with the steam bath we used to get.

My own fault I guess for leaving Nelson for Christchurch, give it 2 more years and I'll move back
