1366038 2014-01-25 02:04:00 Several days ago my tech-phobic wife looked up from tap-tap-tapping a text on her cellphone (my old Sony Ericsson W995) and said "I want a smartphone!" Well, I nearly fell over, but it was a pleasant surprise. Seems she finally realized that having to press tiny keys up to 3 times to get a single letter was a hassle.

So I gave her my smartphone to try, a Motoroloa Defy (3.7 in screen, single core, 2.2.2, yes I want to update it) and told her to try texting on the QWERTY keyboard holding the phone lengthwise. That did it, she wanted a new phone. An amazing decision because she is *very* inept and phobic about techie gear.

Anyhow, that afternoon we made it to Noel Lem's in Palm Nth (about half an hour after the earthquake - the staff were still :D 'energized' from running outside with the customers and picking up items off the floor). I had already decided on a Samsung phone, certainly not an iPhone (dislike Apple and they are overpriced), not a Windows phone, and nothing cheapie-cheap.

We purchased a Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 (www.gsmarena.com), for $349, and it is 4G - yeaahh!!
Brilliant screen, faster than my old Defy, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, autofocus + flash. For the price it is a fantastic phone... but how would tech inept SWMBO cope learning a new system? I kid you not that she still has problems remembering how to copy and paste, or clicking on a pop up window that says NEXT or whatever. She simply freezes when something new is on the screen. No, she is not new to computers and phones; I have been banging my head for about 14 years answering the same :waughh: old basic questions.

Well so far it has been surprising: She can :punk in fact use the phone! She even took several HD videos and can send and receive emails.

Wonders never cease folks...

I think she especially likes the cute ring and text tones and the colourful wallpapers, and the purple case I got for it (unlike my Gorilla Glass Defy it is likely to be damaged when dropped without a case, which is sure to happen sometime). A year ago I put her on a $30/month 2degrees plan so mobile internet is turned on so email and Skype are easy for her on her new phone.

For those of you who don't want a big screen phone and want to avoid Apple prices, I can recommend the Samsung Ace 3. It is the S7275-T model, T meaning Telecom but it works on Vodafone / 2degrees. Is there anyway to get rid of the Telecom :annoyed: splash screen without rooting the phone?

1366039 2014-01-25 03:27:00 Sounds just like my wife. Except I HAD to buy her another iPhone so she can play Sudoku, send texts, make telephone calls and take photos. She has data turned off and doesn't want to get emails on the phone.

I even tried to convert her to Android (took all of five minutes to set a spare SIII up) but she didn't want to listen to her beloved husband. (In fact I suspect that she refused it BECAUSE I recommended it!)

I was not a happy chappy having to spend over a $1000 for her pitiful use of the available functionality - but what could I do?

Wives: can't reason with them, can't shoot them!!!!

1366041 2014-01-25 05:29:00 Having 4G is not much use on 2 degrees. Otherwise nit a bad phone, youngest son got that for xmas. But we did talk the oldest into the nexus4. Johcar, im glad you don't put a price on your wifes happiness. plod (107)
1366042 2014-01-25 05:54:00 I would have gone for the Moto G for $299. Only thing it doesn't have LTE..

I wouldn't worry about the Telecom splash screen it's only there for a few seconds plus how many times a day is she rebooting the fone..

As long as she is happy with her iPhone, that is all that matter

Hmmm.
I have an old non-smartphone.

Used a visitors smartphone the other day - an Iphone some version.....

He wanted to use my wireless so I attempted to enter the password for him..
Now it has a capital M in it....M is near the backspace key on this demented layout. Every time I touched it, it would delete the previous letter.
Nails don't work on the screen, you had to use your skin...and no way, whatever finger I used could I get the damn thing.

Gave up and had him enter it.

Hate it.

Brother has 2, one of them you can use those pen type things.....no....didn't find that especially nice either.
And $350 for a phone??!!!......

+1 to that!

Buying one doesnt mean you have to pay an arm and a leg, but at least one thats $350 would be considered "low cost" for sure.

There's some incredibly decent ones you can get these days for that price though!
