1366698 2014-02-04 20:53:00 Majority of teh time I use Android to be honest.

PC is using W7 which is a fine piece of software.

Linux, OSX and W8 are all flawed items of software and none of them interest me.

Everyone to their own.

I'm not jealous of the wifey's W7 machine or her little March m/v, still prefer my XP SP3 machine and Mitsi car.

Lurking.

1366700 2014-02-04 22:45:00 I might represent more of the (average) mass out there. To me it is if XP works why spend money and change it. I got Win7 free from a course, at the time I was still using XP on my new built computer (signature) in 2009. I have used Windows 8.1 demo with the taskbar they added to me that was a bit different but it just needed time to get used to. I just felt it was going with the times integrating PCs with the tablets way of use. I guess many users would buy a new computer if they needed it and got Windows 8 for free. It would be interesting to see some stats of those who are using XP is that their old computer or if chose to downgrade to XP / 7. Nomad (952)
1366701 2014-02-05 01:59:00 I switched to W7 as I upgraded hardware, for me XP is back with W98SE in terms of relevancy in 2014.

I'm disappointed that I picked a W8 laptop for my wife.

1366702 2014-02-05 03:26:00 OK, I have now got Window 8 . 1 up, running and pretty much customised to my preferences . And to all intents and purposes it *almost* looks and behaves like my Win XP setup because I have made the Desktop my default view with shortcuts to the programs I use everyday either on the Desktop or Taskbar .

Whilst there are a number of things, including the lack of a Win XP-style Start button, that annoy me they are not a huge big deal and I can live with them . As wainuitech has told us again and again you can beat it into submission and customise things to your own preferences . That does take quite a while, however, not least because you have to learn where everything has gone and how to get the thing how you want it . Having used Windows since it began I guess the learning curve is not too much different to the jump from Windows 95/98 to Win XP . You just have to fiddle to find things out .

Do I like it? Now that I have almost got it working how I want it, yes it is starting to grow on me . It has fixed the Windows 7's File Explorer and Libraries annoyances but I am really going to miss the old 16-bit program which won't install . I can run that on my WinXP laptop but it would have been more convenient on my main machine . At least everything else I have tried installing so far has worked without a hitch .

Metla I am surprised at you . You're a geek - upgrade the laptop to 8 . 1, get past the awful Start/Metro screen to the Desktop and make Win8 (almost) the same as Win7 . ;)

1366704 2014-02-05 03:54:00 Was working on a couple of XP's today, god they felt so antiquated and horrible to use & out dated compared to the W7 & W8.1.

That's funny, when I boot XP after using Windows 7 for a while it feels great, crisp fonts without all that stupid smoothing rubbish, nice clean square UI elements instead of that rounded Aero junk... *sigh*... I'm going to miss it when it's finally gone. :(

In that respect though I do like Windows 8 for returning to a flat\square style, but the rest of it is insane.

1366705 2014-02-05 03:59:00 Quick Test, :p

I've left out the task bar on purpose other wise its a dead giveaway. Two pictures, ones W8.1, the other is W7, both with the control panel open.

One is running in a VM.

But is W8.1 the host or is W7 the host ? I Changed one icons name on the desktop as as w8.1 uses different names.

Without looking at your control panel which is which ? If I didn't have the control panels it would be hard to tell unless you know what to look for.

1366706 2014-02-05 04:05:00 Going by the window decorations and the desktop icon for Virtualbox, Windows 8 is the host and Windows 7 is in the VM. Agent_24 (57)

That works - provided you know how to ask the question.

Sometimes I don't know what terms to use to find out what I want to know. That is when PF1 comes to the rescue. :p
