1381258 2014-08-11 23:01:00 I went with installing MSE on her Win 7 machine. We'll leave it at that, given that its virtually a disposable lappie.

Thanks tons as always for the help folks.

1381259 2014-08-12 17:25:00 Forget about defender or MSE what it use to be called
Avast free version is ok to use but it does have annoying pop ups sometimes and some false alerts
I have used pc cillian ( not bad ), Kasperky very good. but for the last year or so i have used Bit defender on both of my machines and i have to say very good . ( read the reviews about antivirus software and bit defender is no 1 or 2 for the last few years ). better to be protected well as virus can come through e-mails, websites, usb sticks and also skype.

1381260 2014-08-12 20:25:00 No, not Avast, unless you want to see your comp slow to a crawl. Certainly, with older comps, Avast will cripple them. linw (53)
1381261 2014-08-12 22:07:00 The Avast problems mentioned in posts 12 and 13 can be avoided by setting
updates to Manual, not Auto which is over-frequent.

Seen it countless times you advise people to run manual updates on programs like MalwareBytes ( As an example) and a year later when you go back it still had not been run from the previous visit.

1381263 2014-08-12 23:06:00 Agree with your comments Wainui. I run the definitions update every day
at a time that suits me, so avoiding the all too often auto update.
Also run Win update daily and Secunia PSI weekly.
As you say, many users would not bother to be as orderly.

1381264 2014-08-14 02:14:00 Windows Defender isn't really enough for me. I always install a good anti-virus. Avast or Eset would always work well for me. ruellesmith (17277)
1381265 2014-08-14 06:13:00 Avast and Eset are not in the same league, one works brilliantly the other doesn't and its called Avast gary67 (56)

Utter rubbish

ESET IS NOT the perfect AV that you imply.
Ive loaded it on hundreds of PC's over the years, Ive seen it occasionally fail miserably in detection & removal.
If it was so good there would be no need for malwarebytes etc

I've also loaded Avast on hundreds of PC's without issue.
Avast is OK IF YOU DO A MANUAL INSTALL & untick all the options in the middle.

If you doing something stupid, neither will protect you.
Its often the user NOT the AV thats the issue .

Agree. Avast runs well for me after customizing. It also has the useful software update notifications, for common software like adobe pdf, browsers, and others.
