331672 2005-03-08 03:46:00 As it connects fine to the web on both computers it must be able to switch fine (correct me if I'm wrong).

Some just told me it may be the built in firewall settings of the router (Dynalink RTA230) might be preventing access. Anyone else use this router who might shed some light on this?

As to the TCP/IP settings, originally I manually set them accord to the manual

My computer 192.168.1.2
my sisters computer 192.168.1.3
gateway 192.168.1.1 (router default)

DSN auto assign
couldn't access sisters computer.

Changed everything to auto assign (supported by router)
couldn't access sisters computer.

Will look at router firewall settings.

Ps. For zone alarm, I have made IP address 192.168.1.3 a trusted site on my machine and IP address 192.168.1.2 a trusted site on my sister's. Is this all I need to do to allow access assuming I can get things working?

Cheers

331673 2005-03-08 03:58:00 You will need to allow some of the Windows network services (in ZA) access to the trusted zone before file sharing will work. If you want to test if it is actually ZA that is causing the problem, you can try closing down ZA before attempting the file-sharing. You could also try using "\\192.168.1.x" to access the other computer, this will tell you if the problem lies in the NetBios name resolution. You might also have a problem with user authentication - try creating a user account with the same name and password on both machines, log in with it and then try the file sharing. This will send the current account details as the default login credentials.

Hope this helps,

331674 2005-03-08 05:06:00 no, I couldn't access other computer with or without ZA active, so I'm hoping it is the routers firewall that is causing the problem

331675 2005-03-08 05:18:00 Leave the routers settings at default or the original setup that had you working, your networked to your sister's PC via the switch not the router . The routers firewall only worries about traffic with the WAN side (internet) .

So, look at your:

TPP/IP (it's working so not likely this unless you've fiddled with domains),

firewall settings (put both PC's in ZA'a trusted zone, on both PC's . Make sure XP's firewall is disabled) and,

the shares and permission on each PC (probably more to do with permissions than shares out of those two) .
