332059 2005-03-09 01:14:00 This old Sony PCG-N505SF Notebook has got a 1394 net adaptor but without the relevant cable. Since there isn't any other network adaptor (RJ45) available, can I use this 1394 net adaptor to connect to a RJ45 network hub?

Tried to find a copy of the User Manual but to no avail.

Cheers

332060 2005-03-09 01:22:00 NO! 1394 isnt a LAN connection, its a firewire connection. This is used for things like Ipods, external hard drives, burners, digital video cameras etc.

You need a firewire cable, not a LAN network cable.

A normal LAN cable wont fit either. They're totally different.

332061 2005-03-09 01:37:00 from the sony site it looks like that model should have a RJ45 connection
What show up under device manager?

. css . ap . sony . com/VAIO/FAQ/KBDetail . asp" target="_blank">www . css . ap . sony . com

332062 2005-03-09 01:37:00 And it won't connect to the LAN. :(

You might find a PC Card or USB Ethernet adapter fairly cheaply at Trademe. Has the laptiop got a PC card socket? USB?

The other way I've used is a parallel port Ethernet adaptor. That'sa bit slow, but works well.

Problem/Question:

What types of cables can be connected to the built-in Network Connector ?

Solution/Answer:

Only connect 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T cables to the Ethernet network connector. Do NOT connect any other type of network cable or any telephone line.

WARNING:
==========
The Ethernet network connector cannot be connected to a telephone line, a coin-operated telephone, a digital private branch exchange (PBX), or multiple phone lines. These connections may result in an electric current overload and could cause a malfuction, excessive heat, or fire in the connector. "

332064 2005-03-09 04:10:00 No . There isn't any RJ45 connection .

From the Device Manager,
The Network Adaptor shown as: 1394 Net Adaptor .

Under Properties, it has got all the network items like:

Client for MS Networks;
File and Print Sharing for MS Networks;
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I understand that there are cables with one end RJ45 and the other 1394 (firewire) . Can I use this type of cable to connect the the ethernet network?

Tried to search for the User Manual for this notebook couldn't any .

332065 2005-03-09 04:14:00 Yes thats right XP recognises, and detects firewire as a network card

BUT it ISN'T for a LAN connection .

So, no you can't plug a RJ45 into it . As I said its for external devices NOT to be used on a LAN .

Altho Google thinks otherwise . Whether it works is another matter tho .

It MAY conflict with something else .

Altho it looks like u can bridge firewire, with an ethernet connection, but I think u might need a network card, (or slot) which u may not have .

Which may or may not apply to you.
