332125 2005-03-10 10:51:00 I don't want to hijack the thead, but out of curiosity...
How do you format without the CD?
My 98SE was installed on a 2nd hand ex-office Machine, bought from a firm specialising in those.
The only CD I was given was Internet Explorer.
Under Software Licenses, Belarc Advisor shows me a (registration?) no. starred with a warning:
"This may be the manufacturer's factory-installed product key rather than yours."
So IF I had to do the dreaded deed, what problems would that bring
(Please don't tell me just to upgrade to XP)

332127 2005-03-10 11:00:00 Is your hard drive partitioned Laura? .

Or do you have a cd writer? Some kind of backup drive??

Well, uummm, Speedy .
(Tries to think of roundabout way of dodging saying she doesn't actually know)
Let's just say I've seen no evidence that it is when investigating info about its innards .
I have a floppy drive (never used) which from memory is A or B? My C drive has all my software & programmes . D is a CD player - not writer, sadly .
That leaves an A or B gap, but I've always presumed the sellers provided a very basic machine - to be customised by the buyer .
And the novice buyer's never felt the need to do anything like partitioning . I couldn't see any advantages .
So am I wrong in that? .

332129 2005-03-10 16:47:00 So, I presumed Laura, that A or B is your FDD (just in case you forgotten, it is floppy disk drive) C is your HDD and D is your CD-ROM? Is there anymore letters that show in your "My Computer"? Renmoo (66)

The advantage of partitioning, is say u have an 80 gb hdd . You can partition this into say 2 40gb partitions, or 4 20 gb partitions .

Then if u want to format the hdd, I think u can copy C/windows (you may have to copy more folders, or wherever the cab files are held), to a spare partition, format and reinstall windows from that partition .

And back up files like your address book, bookmarks from the browser etc as well .

Thats what I do here . I also copy XP updates to a spare partition, just in case, I have to format . That way, I wont have to redownload the updates once I reinstall XP . And other programs like Adobe reader etc .

The other good thing about partitioning is, if u get a virus on some part of the hdd (say a partition u created), it shouldnt affect the partition, the operating system is installed on . Altho, both partitions are physically on the same hard drive . The partition acts like a separate part of the hdd altogether . (as if u had 2 different hard drives) .

As a new partition will also create a new letter . (ie: the main hdd letter is C) .

The more partitions u create, it'll create more letters (ie: D,E,F,G etc) in windows .

332131 2005-03-11 01:24:00 You MUST have a firewall enabled before going back on the internet after the reformat so if you don't have a MS SP2 upgrade disk just remember to have a firewall handy on a CD to install immediately after reformatting and BEFORE you go on the internet or you will be back to square one again.

It is often necessary to do a clean install, things often get messy (virus, even legitimate apps). If it is XP it sure is a good idea to have firewall if u hooked to an ADSL, I worked at a University and reformated a pc around time of Sasser running amok and within minutes it was infected again.
Re-formatted and then patched, then reconnected to the network.

332132 2005-03-11 02:53:00 Who cares, as long as the person is competent.
I'm interested to see how he justifies charging that rate for performing simple tasks.

If he has spent money on Microsoft Certification, then I can understand.

If a person has no certification it is difficult to determine competancy without letting them go to work and hoping.

Like what sort of Microsoft Certification qualification should people have to do this sort of thing, and charge that rate?
