332839 2005-03-10 10:04:00 I have HP Omni laptop and had win 98 on it until upon booting it came up with "corrupted himem.sys file" and wouldnt boot up Win 98. Just before it did this user was surfing net when whole laptop froze. So i tried formatting the HD and when i did FDISK and tried creating new partition it came up with "checking drive intergrity" message and hangs.

I also tried formating using /q command and it does it ok but upon accessing C: it gives message "program caused divide overflow error". Also when i get to Win ME setup screen it says problem with HD as could not write to boot sector and then quits

Now does this sound like a possible virus issue...or is the hard drive gone kaput for good. If it is kaput, anyway to bypass this maybe just use portion of the 1 Gb drive or at least some third party dos based program to fix it.

Any help will be good

Thanks

332840 2005-03-10 10:18:00 Is the virus option in the BIOS on?? If it has one? If it is on, turn it off.

See if it makes any diff. How were u formatting it?? booting from the cd?? a bootable disk that boots into DOS??

332841 2005-03-10 11:18:00 Don't put ME on it! BAd O/S!
Are you sure you have wiped the HDD completely?
Fdisk and delete logical, extended and primary.
Create new partion(s)
Then reboot, then format (full).
Then install an O/S.

332842 2005-03-10 21:21:00 I booted from Floppy first and then did FDISK (Option 3) then went
back to create partition screen and when selected yes to create it
...it hung on "checking drive integrity"

I also tried doign format using just the floppy not from CD.
Will check for virus protection in BIOS this evening.

332844 2005-03-11 08:51:00 I have just tried DELPART to delete partition and start from scratch and when i try to save changes after deleting it gives message "disk write error updating partition table". And hence doe snot delete the partition.

Does someone have any ideas on this????? :help:

332846 2005-03-11 09:29:00 Unfortunately that does not run on MSDOS. I have tried google
and cant find a single DOS based one :groan:

332847 2005-03-11 09:36:00 Did u try this?

support.microsoft.com

Have you got a bootable 98 floppy??

If not get one here http://www.bootdisk.com
Speedy Gonzales (78)
332848 2005-03-11 10:04:00 Yeah initially it came up for himem . sys and then all files got same meesage as win 98 tried loading up . . . my guess is that it was cause of bad disk sectore . Anyways the disk is formatted now .

And when running scandisk it gives tick for everything but when gets to "surfac scan" it say "run time error" . . so basically it seems the partitiontable/boot sector is stuffed or worse hard drive is kaput .
So i am just trying to get a tool to fix it but it has to be DOS based as its laptop and i cant just take hard drive out and plug into pc to check from primary drv
