332562 2005-03-10 01:51:00 Hi i've been asked by my family member to recommend me them an accounting software package for there own business. They have their own clients and do contract work for other companies, have a couple of employees, they are in the construction/building industry.

Has anyone used QuickBooks 2004 Professional or any other accounting packages. Leaning more towards them, as the interface seems easier to use, with instructive help, the only downside is there have an 0900 help number for support! and its five hundred bucks!

Have looked into MYOB, have used it before, and found it confusing and unrealiable to use. Anyone else have any comments?

332564 2005-03-10 01:56:00 Yep looking at Quicken, the Quickbooks 2004 Pro, there any difference between the 2? MYOB and Quicken? have you used any of them before Sleepy (7202)

I don't know how you find MYOB confusing. Don't write it off because of your past experience.

What do they want a system to do for them?

332566 2005-03-10 05:33:00 Have you looked at Cashbookcomplete? It is on the disk that comes with PC World mag, I use it and find it simple. It is an invoicing and accounting program and has a simple GST report feature and has all the reports you will need to prepare your books for handing over to the accountant.
The trial version allows you to use it for home bookkeeping but it doesn't allow you to do tax reports. Full version is (was) $150 approx.
Try it you might like it.

332567 2005-03-10 06:33:00 I've used Quickbooks pro for a design & build business, but a much earlier version than 2004, it's pretty good, was never used to it's full capabilities . MYOB is much the same, six of one 1/2 dozen of the other .

I don't bother with it now, far too complex for a one man band consulting business . I'd also investigate Cashbook Complete, and a few other more economic options than QB and MYOB .

Their choice should consider, in part, whether they expect the business to grow or whether they're happy with where it's at . If growth is expected, something that is scalable would be handy .

332568 2005-03-10 07:39:00 MYOB is good, we had an internal for it in accounting, it was worth 3 credits, we worked from the book that was supplied it showed how to do certain accounts or sales, purchases etc. once you learn were everything is and how to enter the data then it is good as. Do they still teach the fundamentals using handwritten ledgers, or is it mostly computer based these days?

332570 2005-03-10 08:57:00 Watch Quick Books . I bought a version with 2 user licenses as I do a lot at home 23 km from my Office . Their so called upgrade now only allows a single user or a 5 user for over double the price . I certainaly have no use for the other 3 (perhaps I could on sell them which is probally illegal) So I am stuck with the 2003 version which no doubt they will stop supporting soon .

If this is their attitude I certainly cannot reccomend them although their program is ideal for me .

332571 2005-03-10 09:02:00 I've started using Cashbook Complete for my business-$240.00.Know of 2 other people now using it,one an orchardist who hires a few people.I have started to use it as my work program (Smart Trade) only does quotes, estimates and invoices.Had a look at MYOB and it's so complicated.
