332488 2005-03-10 00:08:00 Last month we bought a second hand computer that came with a dvd burner. Last week we tried to burn a dvd iso through Nero Burning ROM 6 (have associated .ISO with Nero) but Nero comes up with a 'Waiting for drive to become ready' (sal.neoburn.net) and it never becomes ready, returning only 'The drive is not initializing! - perhaps due to a defective disc'.

When we first tried it, we used a DVD-R 8x disc (imation), which required downloading firmware, only I wasnt sure which firmware to download because we dont know the brand of the DVDRW. So we got some 4x DVD-Rs' (imation).

I thought maybe the drivers might need to be updated, but updating via Device Manager doesn't do anything, and I dont know where to go because we dont know the brand of the drive. We cant get in contact with the guy we bought it off either. The computer is sweet as apart from this, the burner burns to CD-Rs sweet as.

Heres what the relevant front looks like (sal.neoburn.net), theres nothing else on the front by way of branding (it's internal). If you recognise it that would be great.

Any other help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

332489 2005-03-10 00:20:00 Hmm yup not a good idea to flash something if u dont know what brand/model it is!

Umm if Nero is installed, go to program files / nero menu, and see if nero infotool is there. (Under Nero Toolkit menu).

That'll tell u what the brand/model is and what its capabilities are.

Depending on what Version of Windows you're using atm.

You shouldnt need drivers for XP, (well maybe other versions). BUT in Device Manager, it should also tell u the brand/model of the DVD (under DVD/CD-ROM drives - in XP).

Did you open Nero first then select the DVD-ROM ISO option??

If u cant see Nero Infotool, d/l it from here http://www.cdspeed2000.com/

Did you open Nero first then select the DVD-ROM ISO option??No, I just double-click ISO, and nero opens, ready to burn it to disc.

I use WinXP. The DVDRW is listed as 'Generic'. :x

332491 2005-03-10 00:54:00 Get v3 of Nero Infotool . See if it makes any diff . Or tells u something other than Generic .

Also try opening Nero then select DVD/DVD-ISO, as there's cd iso and dvd-iso in Nero .

It maybe cd iso that its going to . Which maybe different from dvd iso . Why it freezes .

The only other thing u could do, is open the case and pull it out and see if it has a sticker, or something on it . Or update to 6 . 6 . 0 . 8 of Nero . . .

332492 2005-03-10 01:47:00 InfoTool v3 returned same info. Opening the ISO from within the Nero>DVD options was just the same. I dont really want to open it up, but I might have to I suppose. sal (67)
332493 2005-03-10 02:02:00 Is the Nero you are using the one the drive came with? Could be comaptibility with the 2 if it is an OEM version.

Have you tried burning a CD with the drive? - the drive may be faulty.

Does it read both CDs and DVDs?

332494 2005-03-10 02:03:00 if it's just for burning an iso dvd decryptor may do the job if nero fails

http://www . dvddecrypter . com/

the price is right too !!!

Would sandra/ belarc etc help identify the drive I wonder ?

332495 2005-03-10 02:33:00 PCTEK- The Nero I use I downloaded off the net. The drive reads and writes data/audio CD-Rs OK, but we dont have any DVDs on hand so im not sure if it can read a DVD.

KATIMIKE - dvddecryter returns the error (byway of status bar) 'Device Not Ready (Incompatible Medium Installed)'

332496 2005-03-10 02:38:00 Hi Sal,

I always use Everest Home to find out what brand of optical drive is in a puter. Never had any problems with it identifying brands. Other than that you could always take the side off puter and remove the DVD writer, most writers have a brand name on a sticker, usually on the top, well that's what I have found anyway. Hope this helps.

332497 2005-03-10 02:43:00 bother ... is it worth trying dvd+r and / or a different brand ? My dvd burner wont record from Imation discs [ dvd+r] off a spindle , but will burn Mitsi ones , and also the Imation ones that come individually boxed , it hates the orange Whitcoulls ones , loves the SKC yellow cheapies [ LG burner ] ... somewhat fickle :annoyed: KatiMike (242)
