332738 2005-03-10 18:51:00 I still run W98 (original, not SE or ME) on a P166 on a daily basis, it was my main business computer until a couple of years ago and still runs 16 hours a day as a print server, adsl internet access to a subscribed overseas forum that downloads around 100 messages a day, and does all my invoicing and business record maintenance.

It doesn't crash, ever. It does get occasional "out of memory" messages on some programs, necessitating a reboot but otherwise is 99% reliable.

If you had 30+ crashes a day, it was nothing to do with the OS. You had/have other problems in your software/hardware.

Cheers

332739 2005-03-10 19:18:00 lol @XP requires about 14Gigs way off the wall...........xp only uses about 1.4 gb initially....you could certainly run it on a 6gb drive . Yes i know the bells and whistles, programs/apps etc add some extra but NO WAY does xp require 14Gb......and yes you could certainly run it on 192mb ram I've seem plenty of systems runnin only 128, it's not reccommended but it will work. However regarding the original question .......i didn't see anyone suggest that the poster who seems to want a copy of the win98 setup files take a look in C:/windows/options/cabs cause they are often installed there .............you could have them sitting on your pc......if they are there that'll be the cab files and a couple of others that's all you need to have when installing so just burn em to cd and bob's ya uncle......... drcspy (146)

332741 2005-03-10 21:27:00 Shorely me would rn better on this new system i'm putting together for the kids? or is it just a dog of a OS?. Stick with Windows 98 and if you have to buy another CD go for Win 98SE. I would recommend trying Godfather's method of backing up the .CAB files first as you have nothing to lose. Remember, too, that you are going to need the drivers for your motherboard, modem, graphics card, etc to reinstall after a format. Do you have those handy? It is easier to find out what they are and either back them up or download them off the internet before you reformat.

I (but probably the kids) have lost the windows 98 cd for their computer. I've looked everywhere but cant find it. You can guarantee that just after purchasing another CD your lost one will turn up. ;)

332742 2005-03-10 22:47:00 right up till xp took over my brother backed up win9x by copying all into a seperate folder using dos and *.* wild cards. Always worked for him till XP of course, deep rooted registry stuff prohibits that. Blade2 (6577)
332743 2005-03-11 02:31:00 Do a search for *.CAB files. If you find a bunch of them you will recognise the W98 installation set if you see it. (The directory might even be called "WIN98"). If they are on the HD, copy the whole of that directory to a CD. That will be your installation CD. It won't be bootable, but make a standrad boot floppy, and make sure it (a) boot, and (b0 can access the CD drive and your new CD when it is booted. Make another copy of the floppy, and test that one. Graham L (2)
332744 2005-03-11 03:07:00 Have people got Godfather on their ignore list or something? :groan: FoxyMX (5)
