332572 2005-03-10 09:57:00 Thanks for all your comments there much appreciated, looks like its a trade off between the Cashbooks Complete and the MYOB/Quickbooks . I like the Cashbooks price of being much cheaper then the other two . And free upgrades sounds good to, rather then having to pay/forced to use the others . Although everyone's support is expensive as!

Maybe it comes down to whether Cashbooks Complete can do the same job as MYOB/Quickbooks? They want something user friendly .

Have people that have tried all 3 found out which is the easiest to use? for computer beginners? I mean all they want to do, is enter in information and print, without having to figure out where to go and what to do .

And just another question, does having an accounting package, remove the need for an accountant? say they can fill out their own tax forms etc . .

Absolutely not! Given that they are computer beginners and probably accounting beginners, the information they provide to the accountant is just the beginning . They will be able to do the GST returns OK .

As for the software selection, it really comes down to what they want to do with it . Cashbook complete is not a full accounting system (as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong) . It deals with cashbook (bank accounts), invoicing, debtors, stock and creditors . I have only used the invoicing and debtors part of it, and not the latest version .

MYOB and Quickbooks take another step and pull all of the Cashbook Complete modules into a full double entry accounting system with profit & loss ans balance sheet .

It is important that whatever system is chosen is used correctly, otherwise the accountant will not be able to use it at all .

332574 2005-03-10 14:01:00 I have little use with Quicken2004 only tried it a few times.

MYOB is easy to use if you have a little accounting knoledge.

Me, I use Excel for everything.

I have also tried Access, took me weeks to design a prety good database, but didnt realy like using it.

When I have another couple of weeks to spare I will probally go back to a database but with a web browser interface.

Yep have downloaded the cashbook complete trial version, just been looking at it. Have applied for the trial Quickbooks 2004 Professional, annoying though, you have to wait for a CD to be mailed to you. Decision will be made when both are on my computer.

332577 2005-03-11 00:14:00 One thing I found with the Quickbooks package, not many (then anyway) accountants had the package to do your year end accounts on. One claimed to have it then did everything in Excel, at our expense. Defeated the purpose of our hard work during the year when we only needed an audit, correction of any mistakes and the returns filed to IRD.

One thing I found annoying about Quickbooks, as has been stated by others, was their upgrade regime. I paid good money (over $1000.00 in 1996-97) for a single user accounting package. The upgrades provided were minimal, more patches for faults, Within a fairly short time, the upgrade path to later versions, which weren't much different, was closed off with the upshot being another major purchase required to keep abreast of changing OS, accounting practice and minor improvements. In short, they are greedy. That is not to say the software is not good though.

Avoid any package that can't do GST for a relatively simple business, without resorting to an accountant, it's not worthwhile.

332579 2005-04-15 01:58:00 You should have a look at Accredo Business Software www.accredo.co.nz Amanda8140 (7557)
332580 2005-04-15 02:59:00 Used MYOB, Quickbooks Pro 2004 & 2005 far too complicated & loaded with crap that's of no use to anyone, very difficult to configure
Now use Cashbook and if you can get past the crappy looking invoices it produces and the clunky interface it rocks for small business use.
Easy to use, great for GST etc, can import bank statements etc.
I don't like the way it handles customer and stock lists but it's usable
I now use Cashbook for Stock, Customers lists, GST, Cash Tracking etc and do my invoices in an Excel template I made up
Go Cashbook

Or you could have a look here for construction industry specific software
ezijobz.com
A couple of m8s use it & find it good for them (NZ made although they sell mostly in US)
