332498 2005-03-10 04:19:00 If it was me, I'd get a new writer. A nice warranty, known brand and lots of bundled software.
They're not that expensive now. $160 for an ASUS 16x Dual layer for instance.

332499 2005-05-01 06:03:00 OK, so I was finally motivated to get out a screwdriver and check the labels on the drive. I got a serial (MS-8408A) which pointed me to a MSI drivers page (cd-rom.free-driver-download.com(MS-8408A)-DVD-Dual-Firmware-130D.html). In the zip is a file ReadMe.txt (sal.neoburn.net) and I dont know what to do :/

Can anyone explain this to me more indepth (eg, how to boot from pure DOS and flash the drive, etc...)?

332500 2005-05-01 06:16:00 Make a DOS bootdisk (prob best to make under Win98), extract the .zip onto the disk, stick the floppy in, reboot and run DVFLASH 150D_SCR.bin. wintertide (1306)
332501 2005-05-01 06:23:00 That seemed more shallow than the readme :/

We don't have Win98 handy. Which of these from bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com/) (so many) would be best? We run WinXP Pro SP2 on this computer.

332502 2005-05-01 06:40:00 Driver free disk for BIOS flashing seems best - just d/l that, extract it onto a blank floppy, extract all the contents of the .zip file onto the disk.
Reboot and run 'DVFLASH 150D_SCR.bin' (that's what the link to the firmware says to run).

332503 2005-05-01 07:10:00 The spec for your drive appears to be here (www.msicomputer.com)

It looks like you need DVD+ disks

332504 2005-05-01 07:17:00 Just remembered the floppy drive on this computer is bung. How would I make a boot disk CD? The drive can burn CD-R's fine so theres no trouble there. I'm just unsure which ISO image I should burn to boot from. I found a list here. (www.allbootdisks.com) sal (67)
332505 2005-05-01 07:39:00 Damn, I was just thinking about it and realised that I'd be booting from a drive I want to flash. Don't tell me this impossible... :/ sal (67)
332506 2005-05-01 08:12:00 You said you could burn CD-. This tends to indicate the burning part is OK.

The next step is disks. DVD- and DVD+ are two completely different breeds of disk.

Typing your model into Google took me to the MSI site. A search on their site for MS-8408A came up with the link I posted above. The page starts with the heading "DR8-A" but just above Product Specs it says "MS-8408A"

You could try their site for latest downloads.

332507 2005-05-01 08:25:00 Yep, we have dvd-r discs here and I'm sure this drive should be able to burn to these. I see that they mention in the Special Features "8 x DVD+ R High-Speed Writing" but also below that, in the Product Specification it mentions "4 x DVD-R writing / 2x DVD-RW rewriting / 12x DVD-ROM reading" which to me means it should be fine. Thanks though. sal (67)
