332278 2005-03-09 19:51:00 I mean the actual manufacturer of the drive, But its up to you if that matters or not, You can purchase Asus, lite-on, Samsung and other good quality gear for around the same price as that rebadged-who-knows-what-it-is.Thanks Metla for opening my eyes. Last time I looked around DVD writers were a lot more expensive. I just checked on the TL Systems site and they have ASUS drives at a very similar price.

Software - I have Nero Express 5.5 that came with my CD-writer - should that be OK?

Does XP home support DVD burning natively?

332279 2005-03-09 19:57:00 Nope XP Pro and Home don't support DVD burning natively .

Only a bit of CD burning, You'll need something like Nero/Nerovision, or Ulead programs or Pinnacle / other, for burning to DVD .

Nero 6 . 6 . 0 . 8 the latest version now supports DVD-R Dual layer burning .

332280 2005-03-09 20:28:00 Im not a fan of Benq drives... Had a bad run in with them a while back...

You're really better off going to pricespy.co.nz and finding another/better drive there :)
Any info gained " a while back" seems useless in todays market. All of the manufacturers seem to use contract assembly factories in China, Malaysia etc.
Perhaps you need to know who put it together more than the Brand.

I'm also wondering what to buy. For what it's worth Benq or NEC seem to be the favourite drives on the CDRLabs and CDFreaks forums. The NEC popularity seems to rely on 3rd party firmware hackers keeping up to date with new media. AFAIK NZ doesn't seem to have many dealers selling NEC.

332281 2005-03-09 21:03:00 Hmmm....I would be surprised if DSE inhouse badging had anything to do with Cyberhome, DSE just buy whatever they can in bulk and rebadge it, Some of the previous drives they had used prior were Nec's ,and one of the drives they have at the moment is a Genisies..... 332282 2005-03-09 21:05:00 NEC make good drives, which are simply rebadged or their chipsets used in other manufacturers drives (with firmware changed to the drive brand).

The main drawback with NEC (brand) drives, is that they don't tend to upgrade their firmware very often if at all, hence such as the Dangerous Brothers firmware hacks to add functions and keep abreast of software in general and DRM.
