2005-03-10 03:32:00 | Bear with me folks, I am far from skilled when it comes to Office apps (just can't find anywhere to poke my beloved screwdriver) Anyhow, 2 comps, both running Office 2000, dragged an MS Access *.mdb from one comp to the other and tried to open it and was told the user account didn't have enough privlidegs to open or modify the file. Looking at the security tab under access on both machines they both have the exact user accounts (Admin, user). So, Anything I can do on the newer machine to open the file, or something I can do to the original so that it can be opened on the newer machine.

2005-03-10 09:37:00 | Howdy Metla, When I had a similar problem I created a copy of the transferred file. For some reason this seemed to solve the permission problem. I also had to right click the new file and alter it from archive/read only, but that issue was most likely due to the media that I had it on (ie a back-up CD). Hope this fixes the problem, until someone comes along with the real way :)

2005-03-10 21:34:00 | Just a very wild stab in the dark... somewhere in the deep recesses of my failing memory I vaguely recall that there is more than one file required for copying/moving a database. Have a look on the first computer for files saved/modified/accessed or whatever at the same time as the *.mdb and copy that over as well, if there is one. | FoxyMX (5) | |

Needs 'Runtime' prg with it if Access not installed on other m/c If DB was developed, or stored, in personal section, copy it to All Users section b4 transfer. Worked for me, although I was using CD to transfer. Don |

2005-03-10 23:58:00 | Hi Metla, when you open an Access (*mdb) file a locking file (*.ldb) is created. This file locks the records and controls access to ensure the integrity of the data. This occurs if theres one user or shared among many. When the last user closes the file the ldb file will delete itself but occassionally the ldb file will be left (i.e. its continues to lock records and forgets to kill itself). When this occurs and you attempt to open the MDB it will say it can only open it as read only (because it thinks its already in use). The lbd file can itself be deleted if the mdb file is closed and no other user has it open. With the database closed on the original PC I would ensure theres no ldb file (it will have the same name as the mdb and stored in the same folder) and delete it if there is then move the mdb file to your new PC. If this is not the problem I would take a note of the exact message and put it in google and see if any MSKB (the MS knowledge base) articles are found. I find google finds hits on MSKB far better than MS's own search engine (which is pants).
