333248 2005-03-11 23:13:00 Hi,

I have a computer at home that is used for uni study by a few people, and it wasn't used for a few months over xmas. Then one day I booted her up, worked fine and I shut it down. The next day someone else turned it on and an error came up just after the memory check "Keyboard error or no keyboard present " or something like that. So after a bit of discussion I decided to get a PS/2 to USB converter as it seems like my PS/2 port for my keyboard was shot (after trying another completely different keyboard with the same result).

Now after plugging the dual PS/2 to USB converter (from DSE) in, the computer now loads XP home fine, and the mouse works. But sadly the keyboard doesn't (tried 2). So playing around connecting and re-connecting things, I notice that the keyboard lights light up during bootup, and I am able to Press DEL to enter setup and play around there. But once XP starts to load, the keyboard goes dead.

Now since I can't use the keyboard, I cant login to XP, which means I am basically stuck. Its kind of urgent that I fix the problem too, as assignments need to be done. Any help would be much appreaciated.

333249 2005-03-11 23:20:00 you need a usb keyboard (is your keyboard ps2/usb as adapters don't always work with ps2 only keyboards), and to have usb keyboard support turned on in the bios (which you need a working keyboard to access).

try another keyboard but if its the ps2 port that has died your looking at a new motherboard (tho just check for bent pins before getting a new board).

Could this mean that the BIOS settings which enable the use of USB keyboard have been lost? I doubt if it's a hardware problem. Computer hardware wears out, rather than rusts out through non-use.

I would use the ability to get into the BIOS and check all the settings which affect the keyboard.
