333209 2005-03-11 18:04:00 I got home from work the other day to find that my network adapter icon was missing, but despite this my network connection was still working. After doing some work i decided to investigate only to find that the option for checking out my network connections in the start button was gone. When i replaced it and checked out the network connections, my wlan adapter (linksys wmp54g version 1) as well as my firewire cards (which were also found in the network connections) were gone.

I assumed that a simple reboot would fix the situation so i rebooted only to discover that it neither fixed the situation, and i was no longer able to access my network. I then checked under the device manager to find both my network adapter and my firewire card listed under uknown devices. I checked the properties for each of these items to find that i had a code 31 saying that windows was unable to install the driver for this device.

I then downloaded updated drivers on my other box, burnt to CD and tried to manually install the latest drivers without success. I then tried to install my old drivers again without success. I have done both soft and hard uninstalls and reinstalls of the device also without any luck. No matter what i have done thus far i keep getting the unable to install drivers Code 31 error.

I did some research and have only found this to be an issue with optical drives after uninstalling the an older version of roxio. I then discovered that it may have to do with a corruption in the registry concerning the specific device.

Today i installed my card in a different machine and watched as it effortlessly installed. This leaves me to think that i have some malware keeping my windows from installing the driver, or that i have some corruption in my registry.

I do not want to tinker too much more then i did last night with my registry (i made a backup and restored it), but it would be great to find a solution to this problem. I am worried that regardless of what other adapter i may put in my system i will keep recieving the code 31 error, grounding my machine from the internet.

Please Help

333211 2005-03-11 21:36:00 Delete that one with the error code, reboot and see what happens.

Are you using XP? or other OS??

XP normally installs firewire drivers.

333212 2005-03-11 21:44:00 Thanks Speedy,

I tried deleting the uninstalling the device via the device manager several times, even physically uninstalling the device but i have had no luck whatsoever in getting the driver to install correctly.

There is a chance that i may have deleted some windows mandatory file for networking when trying to rid my system from a ie browser hijack. I have been using firefox for quite a while now at home, but i couldnt stand the thought that my ie browswer was jacked.

That is my now what i think my problem is. Any ideas which files are necissary for windows networking that i may have accidently deleted?

333213 2005-03-11 21:56:00 Hmm the only thing I can think , is with some PCI cards (is the firewire card onboard, or a PCI card)??

If PCI, if u use XP, sometimes it wont install drivers if XP has a registry permission prob . (The only prob is, yours was going before), which sounds pretty strange .

With this registry permission prob, u have to go into the registry, to give PCI devices permission to install drivers . (thats usually for EVERY PCI device u install) .

BUT if you havent had to do this before, I dont think this is your problem now .

When u had this browser hijacker, what or how did u go about removing it??

Just delete the files for it in Windows? Or use a program to remove whatever hijacker u had??

If it is a PCI card, try installing it into another slot or make sure it is screwed in properly (it may have come out somehow)??

333214 2005-03-12 05:13:00 I am fairly certain now that i must have deleted some windows specific networking dll or other file . I tried manually deleting files that had just been accessed when doing a search, i may have been careless and deleted a necissary file .

I tried totally removing the network component of windows via the add remove programs and the button for windows components, but it did not reinstall this file .

I wish i knew which files were necissary to allow for windows networking then i would simply copy the file from another xp box in the house and paste it on my messed up box .

Any tips would be greatly appreciated .

333215 2005-03-12 17:46:00 So i have narrowed it down to something keeping the rasman service from starting properly. I have found in the event logger a warning with the rasman service stating "Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because NDISWAN could not be opened."

The ndiswan file is on on my machine, so it has to be something that keeps the ndiswan from opening. I have no idea what to do, but i am sure that it is just a single file that is missing that is required to load the network adapter drivers. Is there any list of the necissary windows networking files needed in order to load the network adapter drivers?

333216 2005-03-12 20:28:00 Try this

Go to control panel / admin tools / services. Then remote access connection manager. Restart this service. Startup type manual. Reboot see what happens.

333217 2005-03-12 22:20:00 Thanks speedy,

I've already done that. I am a software engineer (at least i used to be) so i am pretty familiar with much of this stuff. I figured that somebody may have some windows certification that would say "you need to reinstall this file". I have run sfc and it did not find and fix the offending or missing file.

I have spent way too much time with this so i am just gonna try a repair install and hope it fixes it without losing all of my data.

333218 2005-03-17 05:36:00 I am having the very same problem now. And it all started with my friend trying to play Counterstrike and accidently blocking a possible threat with Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect. Did the repair install work or what? SLICK (7571)
