2005-03-10 23:09:00 | I have been asked to download answers.com and have a look at it. To download I have to agree to activeX being installed. As this is from Microsoft I am wary. Is there any problem with activeX? Thanks for your advice. Pat.

2005-03-10 23:13:00 | Thats a loaded question. Its most probally harmless,Most ActiveX controls are, but i don't like the look of that software at all. Toolbars galore.

2005-03-10 23:50:00 | No,Not at all. Active X controls are a major security hole in MS software and a malicious one can cause massive havoc, Answers.com looks fine though and I coud not find any reports of people haveing issues with it.

Nothing is safe, even the most harmless looking thing can cause havoc, from viruses through to installing hardware that will conflict with everything on ur computer. It is nice to have stability in ur life but u r unlikely to get that with computers, they are supposed to make our lives better (this is called progress) but things seems to just get worse |

2005-03-12 01:58:00 | Thank you Metla for your elucidation. Thanks too KatiMike for these extensive and helpful references. Well said Cicero. I do hope this helps Blade 2 with his negitivity problem. Taking all this on board I have decided to forget answers.com because of having to install activeX. You've all made my post well worth while, Pat.

2005-03-12 10:21:00 | ActiveX should be treated like any application you download from the Internet. If you trust the site you are visiting and the control is signed with a valid certificate then you can then make the decision to allow it. Make sure that you have good, up-to-date anti-virus, firewall and ad-ware software. All these help reduce your exposure, but you can never be too careful. A quick check of Answers.com shows that it is ad-supported, which means that it will be collecting information to sell about what you do on-line. If that is of concern to you, don't use the service. If you don't have a problem, hope the service helps. | Harry (854) | |
