333374 2005-03-12 10:01:00 Did I miss something here?

If PJ could actually open the document, he would not have a password problem?
Presumable the password stops him opening it.

Impression I got was that he open it but not edit it.

333375 2005-03-12 10:26:00 Hi PJ
Open the document. Edit-Select all. Copy.
Open a blank document. Paste. The new document is often not protected.
But he has to know the password to do that in the first place.

333376 2005-03-12 23:10:00 Hi ninja. With all due respect, etc.... In Word 2003 if you use Tools > Protect Document and use Formatting Restrictions and/or Editing Restrictions with a password, the document has limited protection. However, as suggested, the original document can be opened for view without a password. When it is open, select all, and copy. Open new blank and paste and the protection is lost in the copy. This is a response to how I read PJ's original. I appreciate that it will not work using the Restricted Permission under Microsoft's Information Rights Management facility. Scouse (83)
333377 2005-03-13 04:52:00 Blimey, this is getting a bit complicated. Let me put it to you again as I may not have been very clear in my first explanation.

I put a password on a Word 2003 document (Idont know why), I cannot remember it. When I go into my Documents, I can get the appropriate 'Word' screen, but with a field requesting a password. The contents of the document are still hidden. PJ

333378 2005-03-13 04:53:00 Nope the pw in word has nothing to do with the pw in windows.

Unless the pw u gave the doc, is the same as what u use for XP.

This MAY work

http://www.freewordexcelpassword.com/ and its free.

The only thing is, by the looks of it u need .net framework which i think is 20mb + to use it.

SG Have got this running at the moment. PJ

333379 2005-03-13 05:42:00 Looks like my assumption was right.

PJ, is there someone else you can blame for this if it turns bad?

"Free" password crackers don't always work with MS office. Not in the same year or two anyway...

333381 2005-03-13 06:04:00 OK Folks, panic over.
I HAD written the password down, I thought. Turned over every piece of paper on thr desk & tried ALL the words I saw. One of them worked.
DON'T say it, "A valuable lesson learnt" :groan:
Thanks for all your help.
PJ strikes again. PJ
