333259 2005-03-12 00:30:00 Hi. I've just got a new CPU Fan/Heatsink, and have had a problem installing it.

The plug won't fit. The old fan had a molex connector, but the new one has one that looks like a Floppy Drive power cable (Picture (sal.neoburn.net)- sorry for the craptacular camera)

So, is it possible for me to get a molex -> new plug converter? The DSE result page isn't wonderfully helpful

Thanks, Edward :)

333260 2005-03-12 00:36:00 The 3 pin one is so u can connect it to a fan connection on the motherboard

Look for a connection on the motherboard, saying cpu_fan. Thats what the 3 pin plugs into. This connection SHOULD be around where the CPU socket is.

Most cpu fans can either come with that 3 pin, or both the molex and that 3 pin on the same connection.

333261 2005-03-12 00:45:00 I've found the one that's CPU power connection, but it's only 2 pins. Problem? Edward (31)
333262 2005-03-12 00:48:00 Nope it should be OK.

The 3rd pin is only for monitoring the speed if u use a program to monitor the cpu fan's speed. Once u connect it, the cpu fan should still spin.

333263 2005-03-12 00:56:00 So it's the Blue wire (There's Red, Black & Blue) that I don't need? Edward (31)
333264 2005-03-12 01:03:00 Has that cpu connection on the mobo got a plastic thing on it?? one side has like a notch, and the cpu fan connection slots into it.

Usually a cpu fan connection can only go one way. And not the other.

Or is it just 2 pins?? If it hasnt got this plastic bit on the 2 pins, just put it on and change it around, until the cpu fan spins.

333265 2005-03-12 03:36:00 You'll have to use your imagination [Crappy picture again :annoyed:], but this is what I've got it set up as. Is it correct? Piccy (sal.neoburn.net)

Thanks for all the help :)

333266 2005-03-12 04:07:00 Hmmm, if the mobo connection doesnt have this plastic thing, I would say

black wld be pin 3 by looking at this manual i have which isnt your mobo

red pin 2 .

pin 1 is rotation or something .

BUT if the mobo hasnt got 1 and 2 on it, I wouldnt have a clue which one is which .

It depends which way this connection is on that mobo . . .

Mines like this

-------- (this is the plastic bit that the fan connection slots into)

R Black

R is red middle pin
Black is the 3rd pin

333267 2005-03-12 04:15:00 Well I've determined that my motherboard dosen't have a fan controller pin.

Will this be a problem, and if not which colored wire do I leave out?

333268 2005-03-12 04:24:00 Can u take a pic of that mobo. I cant really help u if i dont now what this mobo fan connection looks like.

As I said, it'll only go one way, or the other.
