I am _NOT_ a cracker, I dont reverse engineer software nor deface websites. Crackers are AKA script-kiddies

The media should portray this type of information accurately, and it would take all of 30 seconds for them to show some middle-aged man sitting on a chair stating the difference between a hacker and a cracker, and saying he dislikes crackers for all they have turned the computing world into: an unsafe environment!

334195 2005-03-16 04:43:00 Bank says chance of internet fraud tiny

15.03.05 1.00pm

Bank of New Zealand says people have more chance of getting hit by a car than they have of being the victim of internet banking fraud.

www.nzherald.co.nz

But if you are the person hit by the car you are obviously not very happy.
If it that one accident could have been prevented by ensuring the person knew to look right first before crossing the road is that not a worthwhile exercise.

The point I am making is nobody cares what you call yourself.
When you tell someone what you do you say you are a Computer Technician or something similiar you don't say you are a hacker.
Most people don't know what a cracker or hacker is and they don't care.
It obviously has some relevance in the geek community but not in the general public area.

But people get hit by cars all the time and you don't see the government or the media mount huge scare drives to stop people from buying cars? Or stop people from going outside their homes because motorists will be hiding next to their letter box to run them over?

The same could be said for alcohol?

Or anyone that buys a TV - YOU ARE AT RISK OF HAVING YOUR TV STOLEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111

It's just not realistic.

We all know that this will be another expose, probably with a real "hacker" interviewed with a voice changer in a dark room. It'll generate a crapload of fear, calls to ISP helpdesks, and scare more people away from an tool that is overall safe, reliable and covenient.

Perspective plz k thx.

But you do see a lot of media education on how to drive cars to avoid accidents.
This also can apply to computers and the internet and any exposure can only create an awareness and better understanding.

Any TV program is not likely to be any more misinformed than some of the information available on websites and likely to be much more useful.
You are not going to prevent it so you may as well help to make it as sucessful as possible.

There are a lot of silent people on this forum, I can't believe that they don't have an opinion, comment or something useful to contribute.
It seems to be the same people all the time posting comments here.
What is wrong with all you hundreds of other people, have you get nothing you want to say about the many varied topics that arise on this forum.

Apart from the google bots that aren't inclined to interact too much with us mere mortals, I tend to agree.

I'ts an important subject to the wider public, whether they know it or not and an important subject to us because we have an oppurtunity to help in a wider context than this forum. Ok, so TVNZ has to sell some time, which is likely to flavour the content of the programme, but if you can't be bothered to, constructively, attempt to alter/add to the content, don't grizzle.

If anybody feels embarassed to admit to being caught out, just jump on a new user name and post away.

If you consider online/computer fraud in general, I have a feeling that bank fraud makes up a very small part of the total, in fact, probably dwarfed by the goings on at reasonably well known trading site alone. Then you have the question of people purchasing anti-malware products because of spurious scare advertising (popups, false positives) only to find, if they're lucky, that the very software they think is protecting them has installed malware on their system (funny how the same sites that tout dubious software can lead to .ru sites, for eg, traced in phishing scams). </ramble>
