334184 2005-03-15 22:12:00 Westpac page works perfectly under Firefox.

Seeing as my "make every machine get a service" idea was headed of at the pass, run down, then slaughtered, Perhaps the banks should recomend to their customers via the front page of their sites that they get the machine serviced if they are unsure about its status.....

Most banks do have suggestions on how to make sure your system is secure and Westpac even suggest getting the computer serviced.
www.westpac.co.nz

I agree getting a machine serviced is a good idea but a few days later they are infected again. Even if they have Anti-virus and spyware programs installed human nature the way it is they forget to update or use them.

The comments from tweak'e are quite disturbing.
"the "marketscore" varity of infection is comman, almost every pc i see is infected with some sort malware"

The problem is that the symptom is being treated and not the root cause.
If your car keeps running out of water, filling it up every day will keep it running but fixing the leak is the desired solution.

334185 2005-03-16 00:25:00 I can see it now:
THIS WEEK ON SUNDAY: HACKERS STEALING YOUR JIGGAHURTZ AND YOUR MONEYS!!!!!!!!!!! WE ASKED THOUSANDS OF INTERNET USERS TO FIND OUT JUST HOW MANY JIGGAHURTZ THEY HAD STOLEN BY PAEDOPHILE GOAT MOLESTING HACKSTERS ON THE INTARWEB

To the original poster:

If you're going to do another "scare everyone off the internet" shock story, which I can almost guarantee is the case, I suggest you look at this:

www.google.co.nz

Of course you'll promptly ignore it, but you and the rest of the media are using the term 'hacker' incorrectly.

I guess though in relation to biased, misinformed scare mongering that crime is minor.

To whichever mod decided to sticky this blatant self promotion which will probably harm the internet in the long term, shame on you.

Edit: I'll probably see y'all in 24 hours, and this post will probably disappear :groan:

334186 2005-03-16 00:50:00 You know, Adam posted here in good faith looking for users looking to share their experience of this. I don't see any reason why some of you should decide to turn it into a beat up on mainstream media thread. I stickied it Ninja. And no, I'm not deleting your post or banning you for expressing your opinion, although frankly you have been pretty rough without cause. Might pay to remember that the poster is a person and not "The Corporation". Vent your spleen about the media by all means, but why attack one individual who hasn't said or done anything here to warrant it?

I think if you don't care for the mainstream media's, ah, approach to technology stories, that launching into Adam isn't really going to acheive any much. Little wonder the mainstream media gets technology stories so wrong, so often, when this is the response they get from those with the knowledge to put them straight.

TVNZ asked for permission to make this post because they thought this would be a good place to get help -- seeing as how it's a help forum, and all that. So can we ease back on the venom, please?

I'm off now to wallow in the shame and self loathing Ninja feels I deserve.

334187 2005-03-16 01:22:00 They are not looking for help or information, they are looking for victims, uninformed ones as well,as that is how you become a victim in the first place. Metla (12)
334188 2005-03-16 02:01:00 When was the last time any IT journalism was not sensationalised and hyped, with the intention of scaring people.

Adam has posted here to get information for a story, a story which will likely scare more people away from internet banking, and further tarnish the internets reputation.

I'd imagine anyone who provides information will have their story edited, abridged and generally screwed up to match the thrust of the article, and for the purposes of catching viewers I'll bet it's not "Internet banking is actually pretty safe"

334189 2005-03-16 02:12:00 and for the purposes of catching viewers I'll bet it's not "Internet banking is actually pretty safe"

But surely this is good reason why users with a more balanced perspective on the situation than Joe Schmoe -- who doesn't run any security software, treats every email as genuine and promptly has his log-in info phished -- are needed to at least try and give the full story .

Look, mainstream media doesn't have a great track record here - granted, no argument . But that track record is never going to get any better if you simply reject an approach like this out of hand . Because otherwise the only comment they ever get is from people who either don't know jack, or have a commercial agenda of some type . Just a thought .

334190 2005-03-16 02:49:00 My view that all machines should be sent in for a service is driven purely by commercial interest......

muhahahahahaha.

To be blunt though, The aproach deseves to be rejected out of hand, they are simply looking for camera fodder, If they had taken the aproach of asking our thoughts on the issues they would get them. But then, they can't exactly show footage of a forum on TV,and it would most likely contradict the usual round of experts that get interviewed for the telly.

They can always come down to Wanganui and Interview me, I have a mindless rant or 3 up my sleeve.....

334191 2005-03-16 04:02:00 My 2c on the matter:
Internet banking _can_ be pretty safe.

IIRC there was some vulnerability in the SSL that banks were using up until last year. This has been resolved.
Most banks are smart enough now to make their sites more compliant so they work under Firefox, Opera, Konqueror etc
_IF_ a bank requires ActiveX, the Webmaster deserves to be shot.

Im with Ninja:
Hackers = Good people who usually make the world a better place
Crackers = Bad people who (Depending on your side of the coin) crack software and tear down websites
It would be a _great_ story going something like this:
Internet banking is really safe, but using your PC to do it may not be!

Internet banking is now pretty safe, but due to spyware/keyloggers etc, then your PC may not be a safe thing to use it from.
Knoppix is probably the safest thing the average joe will get to a fully secure PC.

I'd be keen to get some feedback from Adam, on what he thinks so far of the advice, what he wants to hear more of.
Basically internet bank fraud isnt _quite_ as easy as normal bank fraud, but a simple keylogger on your PC and you're screwed!

Chill.

334192 2005-03-16 04:22:00 Bank says chance of internet fraud tiny

15.03.05 1.00pm

Bank of New Zealand says people have more chance of getting hit by a car than they have of being the victim of internet banking fraud.

334193 2005-03-16 04:30:00 How did hackers and crackers become an issue on this post.
Who cares what they are called, it make no difference to most people what the person is called who originates spyware, viruses and keyloggers.
The point of the proposed story is to bring attention to a problem which many people are blisfully unaware of and any advice and information even if some of it is not technically correct can only help to make people consider more carefully how they operate and maintain their computer systems.
If they are called hackers in the media, so what. It does not affect the validity of the information presented if that is reasonably accurate.
