334848 2005-03-16 23:00:00 Hi,
a few years ago i was put off lcd screen if i was gaming. i am in the market for another comp and wondering if new lcd screens are ok for gaming now. if so what specs do i need to look for.

334849 2005-03-16 23:15:00 I use a Samsung 172x, 12 ms response time and it's great for DVD's and games. I see it is now just over $600, damn that's cheap for such an awesome display. Look at a few displays at some retail outlets and look for low response times, although take the manufacturers claims with a grain of salt. Sb0h (3744)
334850 2005-03-16 23:58:00 I'm getting a 19" LCD with 8ms Response Time and 8-bit Color

BenQ FP937S+ (www.pricespy.co.nz)

Make sure you get the S+ model as the S is only 12ms and 6-bit color.

334851 2005-03-17 02:09:00 Samsung 710T 17" 12ms is all good for Warcraft 3 and WoW. Don't play shooter.

It's an expensive purchase, get a quality brand, and try it in the shop. Some are picky if you have a dead pixel once you take it home.

I wouldn't want a 19" as I sit less than a metre away from my screen, and I don't wanna have to move my head. :D

Are you sure that it is actually 8-bit colour? I've read conflicting reports on this..

Subject: FP937S+

I am considering purchasing a BenQ FP937S+ I am concerned as to whether it has 6-bit color . While most manufacturers say they screens can display 16 . 7 Million colors with electronics, they use either 6-bit or 8-bit screens and dither the results, or something like that .

Can you tell me what your screen above uses .

Their Response

Subject: RE: FP937S+

6 bit refers to 2 to the power of 6 levels or 64 different colour levels in each of the 3 colours . So the number of achievable colours is 64 Red levels X 64 Green levels X 64 Blue levels = 64 x 64 x 64 = 262,144 colours .

8 bit is 2 to the power of 8 or 256 different levels . With 8 bit panels 256 x 256 x 256 = 16,777,216 colours are available .

The number of colours produced is not the main issue here as the human eye can only differentiate a limited number of colours, what is more important is the grey levels produced . The 6 bit panel is based on 64 grey steps from black to white, the 8 bit panel has 256 levels . This is a big difference and can be easily seen by the human eye .

FP931 and FP937s both have 6 bit panels . The new model FP937s+ uses an 8 bit panel and also has an 8 msec response time, the fastest currently available in the industry .

You should be contemplating the purchase of an FP937s+ if you are concerned about this colour issue .
