334776 2005-03-16 21:47:00 Okay im not sure if this was a virus or something, though i doubt it because i did a virus scan and took out all my viruses . My usb ports will NOT detect anything i plug into them, not my printer or my MP3 Player . I think they still work because my mp3 player (which has internal rechargable batteries which draw power from the USB ports) still recharges when its plugged into my computer .

And my cd drive is missing from My Computer and everywhere else its dissappeared from the face of my computer . I have 2 computers, so i took my cd/rw drives from both and swapped them, and my cd/rw drive works on the other one, and wont detect that cd drive either .

What in gods name is wrong with my computer i cant figure it out (BTW the usb ports and my cd drive stopped working at the same time if that makes any difference), my friend thinks my bios is infected?

Please help! :(

334777 2005-03-16 21:55:00 What OS are you running?

is the cd drive detected by the bios on boot?

Any dodgy looking entries in device manager?

334778 2005-03-16 22:00:00 Hmm can u get into the BIOS at all? I would go into the BIOS. See if the USB is enabled.

And check that the CD/s are on AUTO, depending on what IDE connection theyre on (Most probably secondary Master/Slave).....Check this and see what theyre currrently set on. Then save the settings in the BIOS and reboot. See what happens then.

What viruses, did u have exactly? If u had any?? What were the names?

And what version of Windows, is on it? (If u use Windows)?

Also, go to device manager, look under the cd and usb devices. Whats this say?? Any X's, !'s or other saying theyre not working?

Or do they appear in device manager?

334779 2005-03-16 22:03:00 Or its a motherboard problem.
Whats the last thing you did before this problem happened? Did you install something?

334780 2005-03-16 22:09:00 Sorry for not mentioning that, i am running windows XP professional edition. Neither can be found in device manager i had checked before. I dont know any of the viruses that i removed, Mcafee doesnt have a button that shows the history of virus removals that i could find. Ill check the rebooting thing later. bendetto (7615)
334781 2005-03-16 22:11:00 Just noticed that last post... This is a little embarassing but the only thing i can think of would be me trying to put my mp3 players usb cord into my front usb ports a little to hard and my computer made a beeping noise and one of the usb ports on my front is damaged bendetto (7615)
334782 2005-03-16 22:19:00 Oooops. You may have damaged the MB......still under warranty?? pctek (84)
334783 2005-03-16 22:20:00 Hmm XP will make a sound, when u plug a USB device into a port, to tell u it has detected something . I dont think thats the prob .

Is that the beeping sound you're talking about?? Even tho it may have damaged the port, (which I doubt), it wouldnt kill ALL usb ports .

I would check the BIOS, as in my previous post, see if USB is still enabled and the cd is on AUTO (Secondary Master/primary) .

I would say, if the BIOS had some kind of virus, it'd be completely dead .

NOTHING at all would work . You wouldnt get in Windows for a start .

334784 2005-03-16 22:22:00 The MB fault may come clear if the damaged front USB socket is unplugged. PaulD (232)
334785 2005-03-16 22:41:00 Warranty hasnt expired yet . . . luckily .

Yes, it was the computer beeping not my speakers it was the high pitched screw off noise the computer makes if you do something bad .

I went into BIOS and everything was set to auto, then i checked a few other menus and i found an ATAPI Cd drive, set to none . The only other choice than none was disabled .

Im probably going to end up taking my computer back to the guy that sold it to me, i hope my MB isnt damaged :(
