334887 2005-03-17 09:09:00 oooo that was harsh lol.

But it does bring up a point (and I have seen it raised in other posts as well)..... what do people actually know about there comps?

As Mr Administrator (that would be Bruce) said before, do people have any idea what happens in the grey boxey thing?

Sadly I know of some people who have owned a computer for 6 years, and only know how to email

334888 2005-03-17 09:17:00 Well we have had a computer of one sort or another since 1985. My other half was the one that got the first and now won't use one at all. Except a rare game of pinball.
And just 1/2 hour ago had a tantrum cause of our new cordless I got which has - shock, horror - a screen with a menu.

After explaining 4 times in 3/4 hr how to redial I gave up and suggested RTFM.

334889 2005-03-17 09:26:00 That reminds me of a family member (who will remain nameless) and his new cellphone (ok so we are going a bit off track but bear with me) he just bought.

He comes to me and asks me how to put in a whole bunch of phone numbers...
My first question: Have you read the instructions.
HIs reply: No

Grrrr

334890 2005-03-17 09:37:00 Worst one I've seen lately is a local school had a network card replaced by the local small town techy. He came and replaced said network card (which he somehow diagnosed as the fault and charged $195 !!! for installation and configuring it( we are talking 10/100 not gigabyte lan). The comp (which had been very reliable) then kept bluescreening and randoming rebooting especially when bumped or nudged by kids.
Had a look and yes he had replaced the card and itwas installed correctly but he had left the old one in the comp lying across the motherboard and no it hadn't fallen out of a slot as all other backplanes were secured.

by the way, how many times have you asked seemingly intelligent people to bring in their comp which is having problems and they turn up carrying just the monitor in

Heh I'd just get the cheapo realteks. These people are obviously just con men.

The only excuse is that these jobs probably do get done in a hurry. I've wasted many an hour trying to find that pesky screw that got lost in the case somewhere.

People do have strange expectations of computer repair people though e.g you mean that I need to keep my machine on to allow backups to occur??
Also, once you touch a machine you get the blame for everything else afterwards.

And people quote the asset number of the monitor all the time (it might be time to stick them on the back out of sight ...)

It can matter little if the person is a professor (and yes in technical subjects) or the cleaner. But really it is the lies that make your computer support person angry ;)

334892 2005-03-18 00:30:00 I'm regularly amazed by the number of people - who have been using a PC for some time -- who really seem to have absolutely no idea actually what is in the "big grey boxy thing". As far as most of our clients are concerned, the overwhelming majority refer to their tower as either "the harddrive" or "the modem" and the monitor is "the computer" or "the tv". ninja (1671)
334893 2005-03-18 00:55:00 I keep a harddrive on my desk, so as soon as someone comes in and tells me they either want a quote on a "harddrive" or they have a problem with their "harddrive" I can pick it up and say, this here is a harddrive, is this what your refering to?

Also.

....HA.

I done a call out earlier, their monitor was dead, I replaced it with a spare, They were overjoyed and amazed that all their emails were retained.

After pointing at the computer and telling them everything was in that we had a second round of amazment, They figured that made it the most clever CD player in the world.

At which point i turned and fled......

334894 2005-03-18 02:33:00 I just spent the day working in a mates PC shop. We have decided to implement an IQ test to customers before acceting OR talking about their PC. Those who fail are to be sent down the road :) Sam I Am (1679)
334895 2005-03-18 03:43:00 If everyone was smart about PCs us techs would be unemployed.
And once we were ignorant too.

334896 2005-03-18 03:52:00 From the first postings in this thread, some "techs" are ignorant and should be unemployed. But I suppose they rely on their BS+ certificates. Graham L (2)
