2005-03-17 06:45:00 | And can connect when I try a few minutes later." we've tried various different ISP's, and they consistently work with my other computer. Mark You say that other pc's are fine. My question is, are the other pc's you are refering to use the same connection point including any extension cables you maybe using or do they connect from another jack point? if they connect from another jack point, check the connection point that is causing this, inclusive of jack and cables, one or both could be faulty (causing line noise)

2005-03-17 09:07:00 | DUN Error 678 - There is no answer. All versions of Windows - This error can occur if: You are dialing the wrong number There is a problem at your ISP or in the telephone network Your modem is unable to handshake with remote modem before allotted time Listen to your modem dialing to see if it is waiting for a dial tone before it starts to dial.

2005-03-17 20:25:00 | Thanks for your advice, but I'm really looking forward from someone a little more experience . I appreciate your help though . When someone offers some help and gets a slap in the face, it tends to discourage others from offering help . You might not agree with the advice offered, but that's no reason to throw it back in their face, especially when you have not provided detailed information on your problem in the first place . For example, you said this: I told you, we've tried various different ISP's, and they consistently work with my other computer . When in fact you had said nothing of the sort . What you said was: I know the remote computer is 'fine' . . . Also, the modem itself works on calling as a regular phone . and then later: No, it's not . It the same problem with every other ISP I tried . . . . You never gave vital info like: brand and model of modem, how it is connected (internel slot? Serial port?) Info such as whether you have checked Device Manager to see if there are any problems reported with it . Which ISP you are trying . Etc etc . You gave very little info, got a broad response as a result and chose to be plain rude in reply . You are indeed fortunate that some of our more forthright members did not choose to "help" you .

2005-03-18 03:30:00 | Port Error code #678: the remote computer does not respond. This is somewhat more of a weird dial-up problem. I'm using XP. Does anyone know what it means to have port error 678, the remote computer is not responding. Let me first clarify something: 1) This is NOT the isp's problem, since it's like that with EVERY ISP. Also, those username/pwd work with other computers connecting to those ISP. 2. The modem itself works on calling as a regular phone. But it's a newly installed modem. 3. The modem has never been successfully connected to internet. With an example ISP like AOL, we can go to the authentication, but after that, dead in the water. 4. Since number 2 stated that the modem itself works on calling as a regular phone, I do not think it's because of the wrong driver at all. Can anybody please help? Thank you so much !! Sincerely Mark Lee [edit: I have merged this duplicate thread you started with your original thread. This is so people can see what advice has already been given. There was no need to re-post it - Jen (Moderator) ]

2005-03-18 03:42:00 | What do you mean it works as a regular phone?! It can be username/password - caps lock is not on on this PC? Wrong driver or driver not compatible with WinXP. What chipset has the modem got or what brand is it? What motherboard do you have in the PC? Conexant chipset modems can be a problem with XP. Go into Contorl panel, Phone and Modem options, select modem tab. select properties. Query modem and see if it reports back? Check also in Device manager - is it installed OK or do you have an exclamation mark?

2005-03-18 04:20:00 | Does Device manager say its working? Does doing a Query Modem report back ok? What com port is it using? What brand/model is it? Have you tried the modem in another PC?
