2005-03-17 03:46:00 | Hi, I've a IBM T40 laptop running XP SP2 with a CD-ROM/DVD reader (ThinkPad CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo II Ultrabay Slim Drive) which is dead . 1) I try to roll back previous driver version, it didn't work 2) I try to install new drivers off IBM's site, it didn't work 3) Logon under admin in safe mode, I uninstall the drivers and cold boot the laptop . Upon entering windows, it detect the physical presents of the drive but refuse to enable under device manager, thus I'm unable to see the drive in my computer . 4) Next, I open the laptop fearing that physical damage of the drive is the cause . Nope . Nothing is wrong . :badpc: 5) I check the windows api using nero's toolkit . It's fine . And so does nero's drivers api . Now here the catch; I could spend $254 . 33 buying a new drive or try to restore the original cd-rom drivers from the image disk (an hidden folder inside the hard drive featuring the backup of the original drivers plus windows) - and the trouble I need help with the second option . Thanks Jerry

2005-03-17 04:26:00 | Your drive might actually be faulty, in which case changing drivers won't make a difference. Can you open and close the CD drawer? Is this laptop still under warrenty? | Jen (38) | |
2005-03-17 04:27:00 | I'd say its knackered. When you opened the laptop to check for physical damage - you didn't exactly take the entire drive apart did you? And if you did, it still wouldn't necessarily prove its fine. | pctek (84) | |
2005-03-17 04:32:00 | CD drives don't usually issue columns of black smoke when they fail. They tend to just not work any more.:( When you reinstalled the drivers, and installed the new ones did they install? And the drive still didn't work? Or did the installations fail? I fear, like pctek, that the drive is kaput. At the cost of some convenience, an external USB CD drive might be the cheapest fix.

But the problem the drivers off IBM is flashable and does not need floppies to boot them . But if I can found ones which can, I let you know . Jen, My CD drawer can open and close . The warranty had expired . Pctek, No, I didn't take the thing apart, I only lift the cd-rom out, took a look for jumpers damages and then put it back in . Graham, I agree :-) They should have flashing lights! The new drivers did install but it should up as a red circle in device manager . Jerry |
