334981 2005-03-17 03:06:00 Hello,
I am having a problem with a computer at work. I have 8 computers set up to all access a file server running win 2000 server.

On each one I map the drive n to the server's folder that containes the files.

On one computer when i try to access the server, it askes for the user name and password BUT it doesnot allow me to save it. There is no option there at all. All the CPU's are running win XP.

Is there a setting that got changes that takes this option off?

Anyone know how to get it back on? Every time I reboot the Computer I have to go in a nd reenter the user name and password.

Thanks

Ryan :badpc:

334982 2005-03-17 09:07:00 Check this
Go into Tools, Internet Options.
Go to the Content Tab.
Click the Auto Complete button.
Check the box that says "Prompt me to save passwords"

I'm sorry, but I do find this amusing . Microsoft users finally get some elementary security like a login screen that you can't just "Cancel" out of, and want to have the computers remember passwords, so that there's no security at all on the whole network .

To be fair, there's a long history of passwords written on sticky labels and stuck to terminal screens . ;)

334987 2005-03-18 03:33:00 I have no experience of XP Home, but my Microsoft "Windows XP Inside Out" book has this to say:

"Note. By default, the Aministrator password in Windows XP Home Edition is blank. This isn't the gaping security hole that you might imagine, however, because in Home Edition the administrator account is barred from logging on locally or through a networ connection. You do, however need to now that the password is blank if you ever need to run Recovery Console, which requires the Administrator password. If the blank password concerns you, you can change it. For details, see "Securing the Administrator Account", page 107."

Going to page 107 :)

"Because the Local Security Settings snap-in isn't available in Windows XP Home Edition, you can't use it to change the name of the Administrator account. However you can change the user name by launching the Windows 2000-style User Accounts. At a command prompt, type control userpasswords2. Then select Administrator and click Properties. Be sure you change the user name, not the full name. "

Apparently passwords can be set here.

HTH a bit.
