335690 2005-03-19 07:26:00 What is the difference between DVD-R & DVD+R please. Are DVD single sided discs, or double sided. ? Thanks. PJ Poppa John (284)
335691 2005-03-19 07:34:00 Most DVD's are single sided, or dual layer (8.4 GB or something)...

BUT one of the DVD's I have here (lethal weapon 4) is double sided.

And the only one I have that is. DVD + and - are just different formats I think.

I think most DVD's can play - more than +??

BUT most (not all) DVD burners at the mo, burn DVD+R. There are a few dual layer burners now that support DVD+R and - dual layer DVD formats tho.

It may also depend on how old, your DVD is (if on a stereo), on whether it'll play either format.

335694 2005-03-19 09:08:00 DVD + and DVD - are competing formats , both have big backers . There is some debate about which format is " best " or more compatible with stand alone players ; players that support both formats are available , and would seem to be the best option esp for computer drives [ vs stand alone players for the tele ] . Dual layer [ for 'puter drives ] is different - it [almost ] doubles the amount of info you can put on a blank [ 4.7 for single +/- vs about 8.6 G for a dual disk ] Then there is DVD RAM - poss best for data backup - however poor support overall . Dual layer can again be + or - , it's just a difference .
another other consideration is regional coding etc , there are plenty of other threads here about that ... multizone = essential
And then there's the whole deal about composite vs svhs vs component output , and onboard dts/ 5.1 decoding etc etc
Anyway my cheapy from DSE works fine for tele / and projector ...
