335627 2005-03-19 02:13:00 Could someone please tell me the names of the 5-6 most frequently used NZ search sites or webpage directory sites?

I have set up a website for someone who is fundraising for study in performing arts, and would like to have it listed in the most useful New Zealand directories. I also want the most used sites to link to my new site so it will be visible to web crawlers.

I have been looking at the sites listed at Pipers (www2.piperpat.co.nz), but this approach will take weeks, there are so many.
Already listed with: NZSearch, Big Idea.

Any advice appreciated, thanks

335630 2005-03-19 02:30:00 Thanks for that. Google is the one I'm trying to get the site onto, have submitted the site (with all the usual meta tags, headings, titles etc etc using keywords), and the googlebot has visited the site, but still not showing up so am now trying to get as many high-traffic sites as possible to link to it. annie (6010)

NZSearch
DMOZ

Don't expect though that all your submitting and meta tags etc is going to get you on top of any lists - the major search engines use very complex algorithms that preclude your site from the top of results unless you really know what you're doing and have a ton of other sites in same/similar category or industry sectors that link to yours.

Also don't go paying any search engine for a premium submission service - they're a waste of money.

335634 2005-03-19 04:19:00 Thanks Greg - I've got to try tho - also the site does come up ok on sites that link to mine, so it's all useful. annie (6010)
335635 2005-03-19 06:01:00 That being the case it's essential that you submit to DMOZ - it helps with the other major search engines - Yahoo and Netscape. Don't bother submitting to MSN - they'll find your site eventually. Also keep in mind that for the likes of Google it can take up to a few months before it gets included in their database. To check, do a search for your domain name. Once it's included just give it time before it starts featuring you somewhere in the results using your appropriate keywords.

I'd give more info on the enhancements you could make but coz I do this sorta stuff professionaly it wouldn't be fair to my paying customers.

Good luck, and remember that Google itself is your friend.
