2005-03-18 23:38:00 | Hi all The situation so far: I have been having trouble connecting to Paradise for a few months . I would get the 777 & 678 errors and it could take up to 20 times before I was finally connected . Very frustrating . :badpc: Paradise help have not been able to suggest anything that has helped the situation . I was thinking that it was my modem so I down loaded the latest drivers and installed but still no better . Friends with Paradise werent having any problems connecting so I figured it had to be o my end . I thought it might be my phone line??? In a fit of frustration I thought I would try an experiment . I located the dial up numbers for Xtra, Orcon, & Slingshot . I created new connections with these numbers with test in the user name and password space (knowing that they would be rejected) . I then started connectiong via these test dial ups . The result: 10 out of ten times for each three different ISPs I could connect  Of course when they checked user name and pasword I was kicked off but that wasnt the point! Can anyone here suggest what my problem might be? Apart from changing ISP! Many thanks Meg

2005-03-19 00:09:00 | What number are you using for Paradise? They seem to have 3 Wgtn & Kapiti on Saturn 086 727 235, Rest of NZ & Kapiti on Telecom 086 727 234 and All of NZ 087 307 272. | PaulD (232) | |
2005-03-19 00:22:00 | I am using 086 727234. I have been in contact with Paradise again and the suggested I knock the Max port speed down to 5760 and add "+MS=V34,0" in extra initilization commands. Ok I can now connect (3 times out of 3 so not a lot of testing yet) but I am now so slow taht it is crazy. 33.6Kbps ...cont. I just reset the max port speed to 115200 and it still connects at 33.6  So now I can connect but at painfully slow speeds....... :(

2005-03-19 00:27:00 | try +MS=X2,0 instead basically, there are two 56k-speed methods you can use to connect . the one they gave you disables both, you're pretty much connecting at 36k or so . this is an older, more reliable, technology . by default, your modem probably used the V90 method . the command i just gave you disables V90 and uses this one called X2 . X2 is slightly older and slightly slower but still waaaay better than the V36 one . good luck . | 335536 | 2005-03-19 00:37:00 | Hi Rimu tried that but got error 692 "there was a hardware failure in the modem" went back to the old one and conected no problems but at 33.6. It is a Dynalink with a Conexant HCF V90 Data Fax RTAD USB Modem. I would love broadband but just cant quite fit it into our budget at present.

2005-03-19 00:43:00 | right . most modems are slightly different so i'm not too surprised . . . i can't find your modem in the pages i linked to :badpc: do you have a manual that came with the modem? or can you find one on the net? it'll say how to disable v . 90 in there

2005-03-19 00:49:00 | yes I had looked through those pages . Was wondering why could I connect no problem without the extra settings to the other isps???? Any ideas? Also if I disable the V90 using the manual (if I can find it) will me speed increase?

2005-03-19 01:25:00 | It's not really a matter of "disabling" a mode . You must have the modem set to a mode, so it is using a standard protocol which the other end can handle . Setting a mode "disables" all other modes . ;) V90 is the standard which allows "up to" 56 kbps . V34 is a 33 . 6 kbps standard . V92 is a later 56k standard which has added features (I don't think any ISP uses this -- it would need (expensive) modifications to their equipment in the exchanges) . V90 connection starts with a "training" session, in which the two ends negotiate a speed to work at . Perhaps something is going wrong with the negotiation, so they are trying to work at a higher speed than they can manage, so the errors caused by the too-high speed stop the login from succeeding . Perhaps they never reach agreement on a speed, so the other end times out before trying to log you in? It might be your particular modem which doesn't work well with the particular ISP hardware (new drivers are unlikely to help, if so) . Try connecting (in V90) with the modem speaker on . Have a listen to the negotiation going on . Compare what you hear with a connection to one of the other ISPs . See how long it takes .

2005-03-19 01:29:00 | Changing the port speed does not change the modem connect speed. The string +MS=V34 (note you don't need the ,0 after it) disable V90 and gives a 33k connection If you want to try connecting faster than V34 try +MS=V90 If that gives error 678 try adjusting the speed by specifying a max and min connection speed +MS= V90,1,75,46000,75,46000 If any of those strings give a modem not responding error than you know that it is an incorrect string for that modem
