335455 2005-03-18 16:23:00 Hi there,
I have a P4 1.5mhz running XP Pro SP2 with a 200 gig Master and 40 gig Slave HD's. System has been freezing about every 1/2 to 1 hr so I am trying to back up some files onto a 40 gig USB 2.0 external drive. When I plug in the drive I get the normal USB hookup beeb with the safely-remove icon showing up. But I DON'T get the 'H drive Mass Storage Device' showing up in Windows Explorer. It can't seem to 'see' it yet Device manager shows the USM Mass Storage device as working fine, USB Port Hub is working properly. H drive shows up in a Dos Window (Command Prompt Window) and also shows up in Diskeeper defrag program. I can copy files to it via Dos command prompt but all these files are in seperate folders and would take forever to copy 6 gig file by file thru Dos. Any ideas why it doesn't show up at all in Windows Explorer? I've connected, removed, reconnected, rebooted, sworn and begged, but it won't show up to copy anything to thru Windows? Is there anything else I can look for that may help? :badpc:
Thank you
Lise

335456 2005-03-18 17:57:00 Welcome to PressF1, jldhoule. Can you access your USB external drive via typing H: in the Address path (or Internet Explorer address bar) of your My Computer? Report back your findings. Renmoo (66)
335457 2005-03-18 18:54:00 Does it show in the disk manager?

Right click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management

Have you formatted the drive before? Or can you reformat it anyway?

Have you tried a different USB port?

335458 2005-03-18 19:24:00 Thank you pixeldust, it DOES show up in Disk Manager ( another new feature I've just learned, thank you!) and it shows the proper size and that it is healthy. It is formatted (previous drive from another computer) but I reformatted it this a.m. again...through Dos and it formatted completely and file system set. I had tried both USB ports in the rear and one in the front.
Because of jameskan's reply of simply typing H: in the address bar, it finally shows up and is now receiving my folders I want to store. But I thank you also for your reply as it showed me a new way to check and that it is a good drive since it shows it's healthy! :D
