335358 2005-03-18 07:48:00 Hey guys,
Recently my friend and I started a heated debate on whether 32 bit or 64 bit pc is better. He argues that 32 bit virus can infect 64 bit machine. Is he right or what? I need more views and facts about 64 bit versus 32 bit machines. Thanks

335359 2005-03-18 07:54:00 Of course a 32 bit virus can infect a 64bit machine.

However, if you have an Athlon 64 & XP Service pack 2, it'll be a lot harder for virus writers, because of NX technology.

I would say 64 bit. Why? 1 word. Futureproofing

Whether its a 32 or 64 bit system. If u use Windows, you'll get a virus...

Any worm/virus/trojan/spyware, you can get now, you'll get it later if u buy a 64 bit system.

335361 2005-03-18 08:03:00 if a 32 bit system can run a program then a 64 bit system can do it too, this includes a virus. robsonde (120)
335362 2005-03-18 08:12:00 Well because of NX, JIT programs may experience issues, but that's about all

Oh, and 16 bit programs won't work. This included viri

335363 2005-03-18 16:44:00 Windows Xp meant for 32 bit machine and Windows Xp x64 bit for 64 bit machine both Windows are built based on different bit. So, how's it possible to have a 64 bit computer being infect by a meant-for-32 bit-virus? Renmoo (66)
335364 2005-03-18 19:11:00 A windows virus would also be able to infect a amd64 archatechure because the amd64bit processors are backward compatible with 32bit processes. ILikeLinux (1669)

Viruses arent 32 or 64 bit. They infect anything. Any version of Windows, and other operating systems. So, really it doesnt matter what u use. If the operating system can get viruses now it'll get them later.

It has nothing to do with whether u have a 32 or 64 bit system. Viruses arent based on 32 or 64 bit anything.

It depends if the virus is a script or a executable file. if it is an executeable file, and built for 64-bit it will not run on a 32-bit system.

Well true, BUT then have u seen any of those yet?

I cant say I've heard or seen of any yet either .
