335305 2005-03-18 04:15:00 Do you guys use the default program that comes with windows to perform a disk cleanup and defragmentor...are there better programs?

I heard about perfect disk as a defrag program..is it any any good?
bigmit37 (7537)
335306 2005-03-18 04:23:00 Yup I just use XP's defrag in safe mode.

And ccleaner to clean the rubbish off the hdd.

Perfectdisk is ok but isnt easy to figure out. And it isnt free either I think.

335307 2005-03-18 04:29:00 I personally have never had a problem with the default programmes in Windows (XP Pro).
The only other programme I have tried for defragging was one of the Nortons suite (can't remember the name), and I will never use it again

335308 2005-03-18 04:48:00 I have found this programme ideal. Shuts down all unnecesarry progs and reboots when finished -- never fails!! www.mvps.org Called GEODisc 2 golfer (6609)
335309 2005-03-18 05:39:00 Clean-up:
Crap Cleaner (self-explanatory) (http://www.ccleaner.com)
Ad-Aware Personal (http://lavasoft.com) +
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) (for cleaning out Spyware)
RegCleaner (homepages.slingshot.co.nz)(For cleaning up the registry).

Just use the Defrag util that comes with Windows (XP - My Computer -> Right-click on drive -> Properties -> Tools).

Tell me, for what purpsoe do you do it in safe mode? I know in Windows 98 it was the best idea to prevent endless restating . But XP doesn't have that problem .

335311 2005-03-18 06:36:00 I tried and then bought Diskeeper from Executive Software. It runs in the background, you never have to manually defrag again. The MS defrag is based on a version of Diskeeper, but without all of its features. Terry Porritt (14)

Coz it doesnt take as long . . XP does have that prob . It'll get to 10% and restart . . . In safe mode, it doesnt load programs in the background .

And the bigger the hdd, the longer it'll take to defrag . . . If u do it normally .

335314 2005-03-18 10:08:00 These answers comparing Windows built-in cleanups with other programmes relate to Windows XP... and we're not all that mod....
So how about the defrag abilities of Win98(SE), for instance?
(Once you've worked out how to stop it telling you it's started 10 times & is now giving up, that is)
