335196 2005-03-17 20:50:00 Hi
Iam try to repair the Blue screen of death which pops up everytime I start my computer. Btt when I go to the recovery consol in windows setup I get c:\ prompt and when I try to type any command for eg copy some files from one folder to another it said access denied. Now I know this happens bcoz it is ntfs partition. Is there anyway I could fix this. I have tried reinstalling blue screen appears. I want to atleast backup my data and format.

335197 2005-03-17 21:27:00 Whats the blue screen error say exactly?

What was the last thing you did to the PC before the error started appearing?
When you reinstalled, did you do a complete format and reinstall or reinstall over the top of the existing O/s?

335198 2005-03-18 02:54:00 Blue screen appears and the system restarts in split second so i cant really see wat it says. I reinstalled windows XP home on top of the exisiting O/s which was XP home. gum digger (6100)
335199 2005-03-18 03:12:00 You can set the error handling to either reboot immediately or to stop, displaying the error messages. It's always a help to know what is happening. Graham L (2)
335200 2005-03-18 04:06:00 some usage example of recovery console (www.wown.com) > you are limited to certain folders.

ms kb (support.microsoft.com) suggests you can change some settings to loosen up these restrictions.

Or else use Knoppix as a recovery CD

335201 2005-03-18 04:10:00 Also see Terry Porritt's response to merlinz's thread on remembering passwords. I think it might explain your problem with Recovery Console. Graham L (2)
335202 2005-03-18 11:29:00 Knopixx stops responding after few min. and since this is a laptop i cant really take the harddisk out and stick into another pc and back it up. gum digger (6100)
335203 2005-03-19 13:40:00 Have you ran some memory testers and hard drive diagnostic tools on it to find on if they are the cause of the faults.

my next pla of action would be to use Ghost or similiar to get a backup (write the image file to a cd-r or use a network ). Although I'd just rip out the hard drive and use an adapter to backup the data.

335204 2005-03-22 04:57:00 iam not sure how to run memory tests in NTFS partitons and since i cant get past dos i can use ghost to bakup and burn it on cdr gum digger (6100)
335205 2005-03-22 06:51:00 Memory testers don't use your disk, NTFS or not. They just boot and run in memory (which can be a problem ;)). Disk diagnostics also usually don't use the disk except as an input. Graham L (2)
