| 335325 | 2005-03-19 01:37:00 | I used to have a lot of problems with the icons on my desktop being corrupted and otherwise displaying wrongly, also long startup times. I increased the size of the Icon Cache using FreshUI from the default MS size to the max 4096 and now there is a great improvement, no corruption for weeks. This is one of the best things I have done to improve my computer. I did it on Win2KPro and Win98SE. PS I have a desktop full of icons on both OS's all reduced to 16x16 which is anothher option in FreshUI. |

| 335326 | 2005-03-19 01:42:00 | The problem with defragmenting when other programmes are running is that the other programmes either write to the disk themselves, or cause the OS to write to the disk. The defragger carefully, slowly, works out what it's going to do to the disk and the contents change. It has to start again. And again. And again. :( My argument against doing anything else while defragging is by analogy with changing the oil in a car. It's not considered advisable to take the car for a quick trip to the shops while the sump plug is out. |
