335506 2005-03-18 23:25:00 Brief operation like that indicates that the PS is seeing a short circuit. It is just shutting down immediately.

Have a look at the electrolytics in the motherboard for swelling and leakage. I'm not sure whether they would fail to short (usually they fail by drying out), but perhaps some manager has located some more cheap electrolyte. ;)

335507 2005-03-19 08:44:00 I had something similar with my friends PC just when he had upgraded the CPU.

What I did was pop the battery out for a minute and pop it back in.

He had to redo all the settings but it worked

335508 2005-03-19 20:29:00 Thanks for all the info. I'm going to go through a bunch of trial and error today to see if I can find the root of the problem. If the power supply is the problem, I was planning on buying a better power supply, because I've heard bad things about the PowMax that's in there. I guess I should have bought it sooner. However, I was thinking that perhaps when I built the system (as I haven't had the cover off the case since) I could have accidently zapped the motherboard. I heard that ESD on a motherboard can sometimes do wierd things. Is there any was to tell if thats the case? I did notice that right next to my RAM there is an orange light the comes on after I switch the power supply on, (without actually turning the computer on yet) So I'm guessing that the motherboard is fine, but then again I'm not an expert. 335510 2005-03-21 01:24:00 Well, here's the things that I tried:

1) Disconnected everything except the 12V connection (a small 4 prong connector) and the big plug (don't know what its called its got a lot of wires coming out of it).
Result: Same scenario, fans turn on for a second then nothing

2) Connected just the HDD that has windows on it and the stuff from trial 1
Result: Same as trial 1

3) Pulled the Processor out, thinking that things weren't seated properly, wiped of the old thermal paste, applied some new paste, reassembled it with connecting everything from trial 2.
Result: Same as trial 1

4) After getting sick of it and leaving it alone for two days, pulled out the stick of RAM in slot 1, not thinking, didn't move the other one over.
Result: Started up but just made one beep for about 2 seconds, oops
gotta move the RAM

5) Moved the RAM to slot 1
Result: Well, the computer is running but I'm not holding my breath. Its
been running for about an hour now without a problem so far.

Hopefully thats all the problem was. Its really unfortunate because while 512MB is sufficient, 1GB was nice to have.

Thanks for the help.

335511 2005-03-21 19:35:00 Well, that wasn't the problem. About 6 hours after I posted it shut off on me again. :badpc: I have no idea what the problem is not. Not only that, but becuase of the regular turning on and turning off (without properly shutting down) I think one of my HDD's is toast. I tried to reinstall windows and it said that it "could not access this drive." Lowlyfe45 (7642)
335512 2005-03-22 06:53:00 have you tried a different PSU? Prescott (11)
